don't just go on size and price... You need to see them. Cheap usually means crap, no brakes, way underbuilt, spindly little A frame .... Just look at 6 x 4 trailers for example. You can buy them for $450 new ..... There that bloody frail, angle iron drawbar, no frame under it's bed, folded frail box... I wouldn't even bother asking the price. A good heavy duty 6 x 4 with RHS drawbar tied back to the axle hangers, a decent frame under the bed if you tilt it to check and high'ish sides .... is way expensive.... but just a 30second look will tell you it's the only way to go.

The trailer to buy is the 3year old one covered in surface rust .... that's probably been used "once" in it's whole life and the owners now needs to move. A quick splash of paint and you have yourself a huge saving over new.

    Agreed.

A lot of sellers actually include photos on their websites and list the materials they are built with.

And Tote, it was MKR Industries.

    G'day Tote,
I've been pricing up a new tandem trailer (10x6) to carry 2.5 ton, this pushes it up to about a 3.3t GVM.. You have to go to full 4 wheel electric breakaway brakes. You can get one for about $4k but it's the old story of you get what you pay for, the ones I'm looking at from redline (young) or riv steel out of wagga are up at about $8-9k, though you may snare one in stock for about $5-6k.

If a 1.6t payload is enough for you then go for a override system custom made to your size, I have a basic resort trailer 8x5 that's about 7 years old, had plenty of 2 ton loads on it and it's been worth every cent, legal with 1.6ton, I think they are about $3k on road from Queanbeyan..it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Yep, for HSC projects a proper single axle box trailer costs us about $1500-1600 to build without labour. You can buy an imported one for half of that!
