    Weight effect on Mpg

    Has anyone worked out the effect of weight on mpg while towing?

    I currently have a trailer that weighs around 750kg empty and about 1100kg loaded. It doesn't need to be this heavy, but to buy a new one or build one up may take ages to recoup the cost in fuel. I was thinking of doing some work on my TDi for more performance, but thought weight reduction may have the same result, but the cost may or may not work out.

    I dont have any calculations but over Easter i took my camper to Bendigo and while there filled every available space with firewood to bring home (from SIL's property).
    I did notice the weight in corner and while braking but didnt notice any real increase in fuel consumption but may not have been long enough a journey to check.
    Once rolling at speed i didnt even notice it but hills killed the speed especially running 32's.

    The effect could vary enormously.

    At a constant speed, the weight would have little effect. The wind resistance might even be greater.

    With a lot of acceleration and braking or a lot of hills, the effect would be much greater.

    I don't think there is a single, simple answer that would be correct in all situations.

    I think a constant speed is a near impossibility with a 300 TDi, especially when towing some weight, there are hills you would never feel otherwise
