I'm interested in the answer to this as well.
Gday All,
I assume the Traxide system charges the main battery then changes over and charges the aux battery off the cars alt when it's running.
So using this theory when connecting up solar panels could you hook them onto the main battery then once it's charged the system will charge the aux battery also?
My reason for asking is with my D3 stopped for a couple of days and us opening and closing the car many times each day to get to the fridge etc the interior lights all 7 or however many there are coming on/off dropped the main battery to 12.0 volts yet the aux battery running the fridge etc but with solar panels connected never dropped below 12.4v
It's easy enough to just swap the panel over for half hour or so but just wondered if connecting to the main battery would work.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Ean

You will have to wait for Tim to respond, but it would be a good idea to post what Traxide setup you have fitted, as the answer may be slightly different dependant on your Traxide model.
Remember though, that all the systems have both batteries linked together. The Traxide will get the main battery up to voltage, before bringing the aux into the circuit, and then you are charging the two batteries as if they are one big battery. As I understand it, the same occurs with external charging.
Again the different models will disconnect the two batteries under varying conditions, and you will have to wait on Tim for detail dependant on your Traxide model. ( Mine is the older Traxide and does not have a voltage cutout or an isolator on the dash )
D4 2.7litre
Providing you have a SC80 or USI160 (Being used in shared mode) you can attached the solar to either battery.
But running in 'ignition mode' you would need to connect the solar to the starter battery (This is based on the cars electric causing the main battery voltage to drop) once this is over 13.1V the isolator will 'switch on' and link both batteries so your solar will charge both.
I would be running in shared mode though.
But wait for Tim's answer to be sure...
Hi folks and as above, the SC80 and the USI-160 ( in SHEARED Mode ) will allow both batteries to be charged via the auxiliary battery by connecting to the rear Anderson plug, if fitted, as long as the common voltage of both batteries have not been discharged below 12.0v.
If the common voltage has been discharged down to 12.0v then you must connect to the cranking battery to be able to recharge both batteries.
If you have your setup based on the external charging source being made via the rear Anderson plug or at the auxiliary battery, and the common voltage has dropped below 12.0v, which means the isolator has cut-out and only the auxiliary battery will be charged.
But in this situation, all you need to do is start the motor, let it idle for a minute or two, till the isolator cuts-in, then then you can turn the motor off and, unless the auxiliary battery is near flat, the two batteries will now charge via the solar or battery charger, connected via the auxiliary battery.
Hope this help you Ean.
