    Little Beauty Wood Trailer

A few years ago when in the bush at my property at Amphitheatre I found an abandoned derelict trailer up in the hills. I had been made by a local cocky I assume from the front half of I think a Chev truck chassis and front axle. No two bolts or nuts were the same and the welding was pretty average. It appeared to have been abandoned because it was at the bottom of a gully and upside down. One would think it had been overloaded and decided to descend the hill by itself. I assume the towing vehicle had not followed it as the tow hitch, whatever type had been used, had sheared off. I managed to extricate it and dragged it back to my place. One wheel was only turned but I thought the bearing had seized on the fixed one. The upper part of the trailer had either rotted away or smashed off but I decided to fix it up and leave it at the shack as a wood trailer. I had in mind building something like out of Mad Max by welding scrap to the chassis to make something to throw firewood on. Appearance was irrelevant. The axle had been a front axle with the stubs welded up to stop turning. The seized wheel turned out to have a bent stub and not being able to replace that I scrapped the whole thing. Still needing something to use I found a series tub and chassis on this forum. I have forgotten the member but he lives near Ballarat. It cost me $100.

Included in the deal was the seat base which I was going to just get rid of for the previous owner and enough old tyres good enough for the purpose. I decided to reshape the front of the chassis into a drawbar for the trailer. I prefer pintle hooks on my 130 but other family members using the property have standard 50mm towballs. I decided to make a revolving tow hitch to cater for everyone. The rear axle was chopped up and sleeved with a piece of tube to make a straight axle and get rid of the diff centre. The drive flanges were cut down and the centres were welded up.

You can't get that much firewood in the back of a series tub so I added some hungry boards. Before I discarded the seat base I had a thought. What about a wood trailer with crew?? I cut a hole in the left side and fashioned a box to take the chainsaw.

Obviously with the axle so far back the front is heavy so it needed a stand at the front. Two were required to stop it resting lopsided.

It needs a Trailerport to store it in so my son Jake whipped up something over the weekend.

Can a moderator turn these photos around. I can never work out why some photos load correctly and others a quarter turn.
