And before all the Land Rover jokers have their say, you have to think the conservative Brits know a thing or two about making their 4X4's last many years."

Then goes on to say all the other makes should knock off some weight off road too.

I came to the conclusion a while back that Land Rovers & G-Wagons are for explorers and the rest are for tourists. Found a Polish expedition club online years ago and the Land Rovers and Merc G-Wagons are the only 4x4's allowed on their trips.
Jeeps are weekend toys, but Land Rovers are for work.

Just finished a trip with 7 other forum members and three were towing. A Tvan behind a Defender 110, a Disco Td5 with a Jaco Penguin and a TdV6 Disco towing another off road van. All performed faultlessly, and Phil and Liz's Disco and penguin have been all over Oz. I think trailer choice will be more of an issue than what the vehicle will cope with. I was very impressed with the Tvan's capabilities, and it ran well behind the Defender. Same width, no higher and awesome departure angles/clearance.

Capacity depends a lot of the driver not being a moron too... On the way to work this morning I watched a territory hurtling towards the speed hump I was about to go over from the opposite direction........ Now anyone with brains that's missed something that's gonna hurt across the road .... Would they do this ... Stand on the brakes in a near crash stop .... keep on them as they hit the obstacle .... I waited for the territory too smash it's sump out ... but somehow it came out of it unscathed.

Now anyone with half a brain ... swears at themself for travelling to quickly on a road they don't know, brakes aggressively ..... at the last second lifts off and gently touches the go pedal to lift the nose and hopefully clear the obstacle without bending or breaking anything. The last thing you ever do it hit something hard under brakes with all the weight transfered forward to the front axle and the thing nose diving under brakes.

Yep, sensible driving makes a huge difference.
A certain relation found that out on our trip along the Plenty Highway and across the Simpson last year, when he damaged the aftermarket suspension on his Triton by going too fast over corrugations. Meanwhile we happily pottered along about 10-15 km/h slower over the bad bits and didn't break anything in the D1. Our only problem wasn't related to speed, but was that a pulley seized on the air con, probably because of dust.

I noticed in the brochure for the new Hilux that the max tow rating IS also off-road. Or so they have you to believe, I wonder if they will honour the warranty if anything breaks??

Well most manufacturers don't honour their warranties if you drive them offroad like they show in their TV commercials so let's wait and see!

Why do you even have a new Hilux brochure....

Just checked the user manual of mine (MY16 Hilux) it just says 3,000KG - nothing about on road or off road from what I can see.

Are Hiluxs expected to go off road.?

Where's that thread of broken back dual cabs.
As said above, it all comes down to the nut behind the wheel.
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

Not sure if they are supposed to, and I haven't tried yet. I know my previous work car - a Captive AWD wasn't supposed to, but I did take it a few places I probably shouldn't have.

It is still going, and being driven by a new Rep to our company, but I'm pretty happy they passed it onto someone else and gave me an 'unbreakable' car to break instead. Having said that, I don't actually mind it - much more comfortable and quiet than the previous model Hilux. They're only 10 years behind everyone else now, not 20...

It still had drum brakes on the rear...

I was looking as they are new and look at the towing ratings of most cars to give me a guide.

I downloaded the brochure to read it and found the off road weight rating.

Makes you wonder who knows more Land Rover at 1000kg or Hulux at 3500Kg off road.

I have towed 2750kg on road and wouldn't like to tow it off road.
