Firewood supply in state and national parks

anyone know WHY they are removing firewood supplies from a lot of the parks in SEQ?

in the middle of forestry areas they no longer supply wood, just let it rot and get full of desease on the ground..

really have to wonder who has all this influence and doesnt have have a clue about getting a life... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Last time I was at Peach Trees, about 18 months ago I guess, there was no firewood so I went down to the nearby forestry office. While they said they no longer managed Peach Trees, they claimed that "locals" were coming up and stealing the wood, so they were delivering it at different times. The stupid thing is they delivered it on a Sunday, when we were all leaving, which meant the "locals" had a whole week to allegedly steal it before the next lot of weekend campers arrived.

Not long after, the same thing happened at Charlie Moreland. Now whenever I go it is a bit tense because the stocks appear to be kept low. So I now keep a reserve pile of a days worth of wood in the trailer just in case.

We try to be conservative with the wood but we like to have one biggish fire during a stay, and this is impractical now.

Don't know if there is a connection to your question.

has a lot to do with what i posted

i dont know who has the reins but they must have had a deprived childhood and have nfi how nice it is to sit around a fire as a group or family ....

they dont supply wood at all at a growing number of places from blackbutt to coochin to bribie and it is a real shame as it does spoil the amenitiy of most of the places.

i cannot believe it is a just cost thing, the supply is all around them. there is an agenda in place to make it less inviting IMHO ...

It may be that they are under pressure from the greenies to leave fallen wood on the ground as habitat for forest creatures.

Cop this :!: - from the EPA website re Fraser Island but indicates general EPA policy.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Firewood
Visitors are encouraged to bring and use their own fuel or gas camping stoves to help Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in its attempts to reduce the high numbers of burn injuries related to open campfires. The policy on open campfires also aims to reduce the risk of wildfires caused by campfires and helps create a clean-air camping experience on Fraser Island.

QPWS will:

prohibit open campfires except in provided fire rings from 1 February 2005.
cease providing firewood to Fraser Island from 31 October 2004
QPWS provides communal gas barbecues at:

Central Station day use area,
Waddy Point day use area,
Dundubara day use area and campground
QPWS provides communal fire rings at:

Waddy Point beachfront campground
Waddy Point campground
Dundubara campground
Campers who want a campfire in the communal fire rings provided, must bring their own firewood. However, it must be untreated, milled timber (e.g. mill off-cuts), not bush timber, as this reduces the risk of introducing foreign pathogens and other pests into the park. Visitors are reminded that all flora in protected areas, including dead trees or fallen limbs, is protected by law and therefore cannot be cut or collected.
The first paragraph mentions "The policy on open campfires also aims to reduce the risk of wildfires caused by campfires"

 What about all the fallen timber that you aren't allowed to 'harvest / use :?: I reckon that's a bigger fire risk.

it also says: "and helps create a clean-air camping experience on Fraser Island". (a not so well hidden agenda or excuse :?: )

and milled timber only... what a tug :!:  They reckon its to stop diseases being introduced BUT the ranger on the island mentioned to us that it is so they can tell if people have been ripping timber out of the bush, rather than bringing their own.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Was searching for stuff on Peach Trees campsite at Jimna. Thought I would add my bit on why Forestry don't supply firewood anymore at some places.

It costs money. Pure and simple.

I have not seen any supplied firewood that was not milled timber. Forestry has to buy this from the local mills.

On a similar note, water is also having to be supplied to campgrounds. There are some campgrounds in our area that have been closed (temporarily) as it costs too much to truck the water in.

This is what our Forestry guys tell me anyway.
