    Chopped car trailer

Friend of mine has a D2 with auto problem. It may be a matter of low oil issue but if its more major than that I am thinking to purchase it, chopped the engine bay and make it a trailer if he wants to sell it cheap.

Before I am giving him an offer and submitting my proposal to my finance minister I need to get all the information and figures to back it up

    1. Does it worth to do it?
    2. Is hard to register it in Victoria? How much approximately to register it?
    3. I am planning to chop the engine bay up to firewall and cover that area with this rock protection use for the trailer. How much is the rock protection? How much to weld the chassis to extend and tow hitch?
    4. Anyone has done this before?

Your not going to end up with much left for a trailer .... 'cos if you keep to much of the car you'll end up with massively dangerous nose weight. So you'll only end with quite a small trailer. Looking at a piccie of a DII ... I'd say approximately the "B" pillars is where you'd need to cut it ....

    4. Anyone has done this before? Steve Td5 130 knows of one I think.
    My input in red.

Would love to follow your build thread.

Nearly two months now and project has gone no where but I am not in a rush. Saw a chooped celica the other day. He made the engine bay as the trailer and use it for bbq. He told me it cost him $700 for engineering cert and not much for the welding. Would love to remove the engine bay and use the rest as trailer. Whats the weight do you think the D2 body only without engine, gearbox, front shaft etc?? But if its too heavy even cut at the B pillar I am also happy. I think I still can fit a lot of stuff in there and probably can still sleep inside as I am only 165cm tall/short

Do you remember the title of ebay listing? Maybe I can do a search on end listing. What was the starting price?

I have a 2400 x 1800 alloy tray on a cut D1 chassis. No different to register than "normal" trailer.

Safari, I think this is the one you were thinking of. I saved part of the eBay advert for future reference. These are the photos from the advert and the text is below. Seller info was "harriannjames" and was located in Corlette/Nelson Bay NSW. I remember it was talked about a few times on here but didn't save the links. If you track down the links, I think they had interior photos. I hope this helps you narrow it down a bit, dearot.

Text from eBay advert earlier this year - January (?).
Engineered trailer built properly from a 1996 discovery the first picture is when the trailer was built in 2011 the second picture is how it is now in 2015, its been sitting unregistered in the weather for about 2 years this was set up for camping and has solar panels with a controller, water tank, 27meg radio, cd player speakers, flat timber floor with marine carpet, battery box and lpg box and heavy duty 360deg tow bar and drop down adjustable jockey legs, I am selling this as a PROJECT I cannot guarantee if this is still towable I don't know the condition of the bearings however the axle is the original landrover axle and disc brakes so its very solid and was registered when parked up.... it was last registered about 2yrs ago and was built in 2011. I recommend inspection prior to bidding as this is for sale as is where is with the buyer responsible for removal after payment it is located in Nelson Bay NSW Tare 1000kg GVM 1500kg build 10/2011 see (vin plate photo) The two vogue wheels on the front are not included in the sale Please feel free to ask any questions

Starting bid was $500 when I saved the info

    Cheers,

Each to his own,my mates was used as a camper trailer WAY before camper trailers were popular.
