    Tow Bar Electrical Connectors

    Hey folks,

I'm buying an adjustable height tow bar for my Defender (LR007223).

Could someone tell me which is the most popular electrical connector in Eastern Australia? The three on offer seem to be:

    - LR005919 (13 pin round)
    - LR005920 (N type)
    - LR005921 (S type)

Hopefully the collective wisdom of Aulro will save me buying the wrong connector!

    Paul

Also does anybody know if part LR007223 comes with the ball?

    Hey Pedro,

This was the best picture I could find for the 13 pin:

Most people I asked say 7 pin flat is the most popular.....

7 pin round ... Small or Large ?

I went 7 large and carry a 7 large round to 7 flat adapter lead for when I need to tow inferior trailers

... seriously though, IMHO, for 4wd that tows off-road, a 7pin flat isn't robust enough ... that's just my opinion.

And, a 7pin round large on your trailer prevents others from borrowing your trailer !

The Hire company I worked for until recently has a huge fleet of trailers - all of which were large 7 pin round until recently. They did some research (no idea what this involved, but multiple people over some weeks) and found that over 60% of the new vehicles sold in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide now run 7 pin flat, so they converted the entire fleet over to this. The smaller hire company I now work for (Sydney based) all run 7 pin flat too. Most servo trailer run a socket on the draw bar and give you the right lead to fit your car when you hire a trailer from them, which isn't a bad idea.

As mentioned, it will still be wrong some of the time, so some adapters will always be needed.

All my stuff is 7pin round large.......... Now I've said that, I reckon we all short go 7pin flat. You see if this is a standard, this allows anyone that needs extra pins to use 12pin flat .... If you have a car anything wired 12 or 7 pin flat, they will still plug into either. If you plug 12pin flat into a 7pin plug, it'll still work so you have lights (but the extra pins won't work so no fridge/etc in the caravan). If your car is wired 12pin flat, the 7pin flat plugs still plug in.

    Makes sense to me.

I'll move all my stuff to 7/12 pin flat too over time. I've wired the back of the old POS Rangie with 7pin round and flat. So I can tow anything in a pinch without worrying about wiring standards.

Any idea what the 'high current' rating on the 12 pin unit is good for and what sized cable you can get in the back of the plug and socket?

    says here:

35amp ... which actually is quite good. I've stuck an anderson plug on the back of the rangie back to a traxide controller either way. With no 2nd battery fitted it'll drain the main battery down to a certain level, then simply shut off the anderson plug ............ Works for me

That's more than enough to run the fridge while driving along. That could work well for the van and the vehicles I tow it with.
