    best trailer security

    Hi All,

    I am looking for a new trailer security device, I had previously used a wheel/tyre brace but after years of abuse it's rusty and not so secure. I have had a look at the local SCA etc and most of the modern ones seem to be poorly constructed. Flimsy steal, crappy lock assembly etc. The other problem is that it does not seem easy to find one that can fit the 4wd tyre sizes.

    I am interested to know what other people use to secure their pride and joy as I hear from the police that using a shotgun is no longer approved by society

    Did you look at the tow hitch locks.
    The one on my boat is reasonable.Wont stop a thief with a cordless angle grinder thou.Then again I dout there is anything that would.

    Locks only stop honest thefts.

    A tow ball lock sounds good to me, convenient and compact to carry with you if needed.

    towball locks are pointless too. back up to it, wrap the safety changes around the rear step and your away .......

    I've got a lock through the hitch on our camper.
    I also fit a cable with padlock through one wheel and around the suspension arm.


    As has been said it'll slow a thief up and deter the opportunistic folk.
    If we are leaving it at camp site for a day while doing the tourist thing I leave awnings out so some packing up is required to slow thieves too.

    If it's got onboard batteries .... just fit a tracker ... mobile sms type thing... They are cheap these days

    Leave a car parked in front of it, that's what I generally do. Also, I sometimes winch the van into the driveway so the hitch is up against the fence - it takes a bit to get it out from there. The most effective way (which we do at work with our light towers and VMS boards) is to take the wheels off. A bit of work, but very effective. On a caravan, like with the light towers and VMS boards, wind the stabilisers down and whip 1 or more wheels off.

    If someone wants it more than you, they will still take it. You just need to make it hard enough that the guys trailer down the road is easier game.

    Last camper I built was made on Tojo stub axles hubs and brakes. As a little security touch I welded in a stub of half shaft to the axle. Installed a set of free wheel hubs with those super sexy chrome centre caps that disguise free wheelers. For security lock the free wheel which then locks hub to axle. Dragging a 2tonne trailer with no wheels turning would slow you up a bit
