    No 5 LR trailer - camper conversion

    I have purchased a No 5 Land Rover workshop trailer.

    My reasoning was:
    The price was right
    It's in good nick
    It's built to take off-road punishment
    It already has LR hubs on it [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]


    Sure it has a pintle hook setup but thats as solid as they come even if its a little (ok, a lot) clanky and noisy. I own a Defender, so who cares.


    My intention, primarily, is to use the trailer as a camp trailer, with required modifications done as I can afford them. (This is the main advantage of a trailer project over a vehicle one - it can still be used while the project is 'underway')

    So has anyone got any experience / advice / websites / info regarding these sorts of conversions :?:

    My first question is regarding power to the trailer, not only for lights but for whatever else may be needed. I will be towing it (mostly) behind my Defender (but later my Rangie) and currently only have the standard trailer lights loom to hook in to.

    G'day Vlad, the trailer in question does NOT have Landrover hubs fitted to it at all, it is a specially designed hub to take the Landrover stud pattern and thats where the similarity ends!!. The bearings are different so are the seals, on a L/rover vehicle you have a inner and outer bearing these are different sizes, the trailer bearings are the same size inner and outer and are much more robust in construction. The hub flange is much larger in diameter than the standard Landrover hub as well, hope that helps to clarify the situation mate cheers Dennis :roll: :wink:
    PS and as for camping, well you probably know that I have one of these trailers, and I do use it for sleeping in when doing runs etc, but even on short runs on dirt roads the inside fills with dust, and to sleep 2 you would need to have a false floor, which in turn would give you room to store items, but with the canvas and the ropes etc you could lose some gear from simply falling out, I secure my swag in the trailer with tie downs so it stays mine hope that helps mate cheers

    Thanks Dennis. I stand corrected. The important thing of course is that LR wheels will fit it [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]

    I had considered the dust sealing, but then I have seem some more expensive camper trailers leak dust too - and besides I can't afford a more expensive trailer anyway.

    I think of it as an ongoing experiment - I might even learn a thing or two along the way.

    Another mate has a no 5 trailer (garden variety) and is looking to 'camperise' it too. We shall see what we shall see..... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

    Vlad, I have powered both my camper trailers.

    I did this by allocating room for a battery compartment, wiring up the trailer to provide two marine (stainles steel) cigarette lighter type outlets (you can have as many as you like), and a light for above the bed (Mrs RichardK likes to read before going to sleep-------I can think of other things I would like to do :!: :!: ). I also have powered water supply running from the battery.

    I run a common earth and all the wiring then terminates to a fusebox which is located in the battery compartment.

    The battery is charged via a secondary supply attached but not part of the trailer wiring( all the trailer wiring is taken up as I have electric brakes). The supply for that comes from the charge to my second battery.
