    Warning re cheap "treg" hitches

    Everyone,
    If you have been thinking of putting an el cheapo 360 degree polyblock hitch from the internet on your trailer or van - don't. I put one on my 6x4 box trailer a couple of years ago - supposedly rated at 3,000kg. Was driving home the other night with five mud tyres in the trailer when "clank"! Fortunately the safety chains and shackle were up to the job. I've learnt my lesson. Safety related items are no place to try to save a few dollars.

    I would have thought those two sleeves should have been mounted in such a way as to pull together, not apart.

    Did the pin come out?

    I wonder if the block had unknowingly rotated prior to fitting the pin.

    I'd say it was fitted incorrectly - the block is "locked" into one another when fitted correctly.

    It shouldn't however be able to rotate into that position.

    You can see in the OPs post that the small tabs welded in to prevent rotation have been damaged...

    Indeed it is not idiot proof - I'm the proof of that! I hooked it up incorrectly before I went to collect the muddies. It was dark and raining and in my haste I didn't realise that the block had rotated in the mount. As a result the vertical pin hole was in front of horizontal cross piece, and the block just tore apart. How the pins that are supposed to stop such a rotation came to be bent I have no idea. Anyway, the original "ball" coupling is now back on.

    I have noticed with the cheap copy "Treg" hitches that the bolt that goes through the bracket section that fits onto your tow bar has the through bolt welded on the bottom side.
    That is on the threaded side under the bracket and the build up of the weld holds the bracket clear of the tow hitch that it's bolted to.
    The Genuine South Australian made Treg has the bolt welded around the head of the bolt, it may also be welded underneath, but there is a completely flat surface for the bracket to mate up to on the tow hitch, Regards Frank.
