This is interesting, it seems to indicate that high pressure mono-tube shocks are the best for this application.

Off-road caravan shock absorbers: Saviour or Slave?

The Monroe shocks have lasted pretty well but the Koni guys think they are too small and not suitable at all.

"The damper must also be fit for purpose. A damper designed to suit a road going passenger car such as a 1960's Volkswagen Beetle would not be appropriate for an off road camper. The Monroe part number you have referred to (15-0308) and the KONI Beetle dampers (80-1350 or 80-1350SPORT) are tiny dampers with small components, small inappropriate mounts and insufficient girth the hold the volume of oil that would be necessary for absorbing and dissipating the energy (kinetic/heat). These dampers are totally suitable for the on road Beetle but never an off road camper trailer. The diameter of some Beetle damper bodies is 41 mm whereas most of our dampers for off road applications have 50, 55, or 70 mm diameters, larger internal components, more robust mounts and significantly more oil capacity."

My issue with that is that the shock mounts are welded onto the trailer and to the axle.

PowerDown have a shock with the right lengths but would have to make up the shock with the correct bushes and eyes. Home - Powerdown : Powerdown.

Bilstein have a shock at $210.00 each .. about the price I expected

Waiting for the Boge people to get back to me.

Might be a pair of Monroes for around 180.00 is the easiest option.


Oh and I found out I could get SuperPro bushes for only $100.00 a set !!
