    CT weights ?

    hi all,

started looking into camper trailers on a budget and am confused about the weights reported. my box trailer weights 180kg according to rego papers. looking at some CT they come in at Tare weight of 700kg which is light (not too bad to tow) not looking for a lot of weight want a simple set up and light as can be. what gets me though is the AGM or other terms they use which then shoot up to 1.3T almost double the weight, surely there isn't double the weight in them when full. whats included in the additional weight jockey wheel, spare tyre, full jerry cans, tent ? which is part of the CT anyway so why would they not count this in, etc
so how do they arrive a figure of 700kgs for CT, very confusing. is it closer to 700kg, 1.3T or somewhere in the middle. any help appreciated.

Got to be careful on that one.

Usually the trailer comes from one manufacturer and the tare is for a bare trailer.

Then the camper guys add their stuff and weigh the trailer down with no update to the compliance plate.

Only way to check is the weigh bridge.

Lots of off road campers empty weigh 1300 to 1500 Kg empty or close to a small caravan.

My 1997 Campomatic has a tare of 500Kg on the plate with a GVM of 750 and had no brakes.
Out of curiosity I weighed it and found a tare of about 750Kg .

So I added electric brakes to the 10 inch ALKO drums that were fitted from new.

I wrote to the RMS to see how to get the plate revised and they told me to go to an engineer.AT MY COST FOR THEIR BLOODY MISTAKE.

I know the independent suspension and ALKO parallel bearing axles are good for 1500KG so I have not bothered, as I think the chances of a roadside check are small, and if I am checked I will take everything out and get them to weigh it, as I have at about 100Kg so it is not overloaded.( plus 50Kg of water , and 40KG of diesel and about 30KG of wood fully loaded)

JEEZ some things give you the irrits, especially since the Campomatic is not a trailer with added on tent but a monocoque construction specifically designed hard floor camper trailer. I have owned it for 10 years and it has been around Oz about 2.5 times with no problems so there are no weaknesses there.

My daughter recently bought a 2003 model and it has a more realistic tare weight of AFAIR 750KG, although I think this is also a bit too light as the 2003 is deeper than the 1997 and has some extras like rear hatch and a PO fitted enormous box on the front with 2x 100AH batteries in it.. BUT it has a GVM of 1500KG so go figgure.

So beware as you could technically be illegal;.

    Regards Philip A
