    We need a new camper.

    Hi folks,

We currently have an ancient Indigo rear fold camper that's so old some of it is starting to turn to stone. We have just got back from a trip that was going to be a trip to Cameron Corner via Tamworth, Bourke, Wanaaring, Tibooburra and back home via White Cliff, Ivanhoe, Swan Hill and back to the Latrobe valley in Vic. Got as far as Bourke where the camper chassis came adrift while we were setting it up. Further inspection revealed lots of cracks that weren't obvious when it was inspected before we left. If anyone ever needs any welding / repairs done in Bourke Mick Holland (Holland Welding) is your man. Great bloke, even better service and well priced. Told us that he patched it up as well as he could but wouldn't take it on "lumpy" roads. Trip was aborted and we came home via smooth roads and kept the camper intact...:-)

Anyway to the chase. After a good deal of googling we've come to the conclusion that the new one will be either a forward (preferred) or rear fold camper from either Mars Campers or Balance Trailers in the $15k price bracket preferably less but $15k is the absolute max we can go to. Does anybody have any other suggestions that are accessible from the Latrobe valley in Vic. If there any suggestions of which ones to steer well clear of please let me know in a PM. Our new camper will be expected to cope with some quite bad roads. eg. Wanaaring Rd. from Bourke to Tibooburra.
    Cheers,

My opinion be carefull with some of the forward fold`s due to distance from axle to the draw bar also a compromise on storage space
In saying this i and a couple of others from the forum checked out Star Vision campers in Clayton.
We were very impressed with the quality they even have a forward fold And they are also in your price range.

And I can't see how the tow ball weight will be under 250kg after a couple of jerry's, a couple of gas bottles, a battery or two and all of the other bits and pieces are loaded. That's out of our price range anyway - whew...:-)

The star vision campers look to be well worth an up close and personal look - it'd be nice if there was a fridge slide though. Still we'll talk to ém. So far still leaning towards the Balance Trailers offerings. During the week we'll call a few makers and see what's what in the way of inclusions, deals, etc. While we were away we saw what looked to be the goods (around $8.6k on THAT auction site) and even to my unqualified eye the welding underneath looked to be rubbish - daggy, incomplete.

I don't know anything about these things, but noticed this recently down the road in Morwell. I know the seller, and he's a good bloke, and I'm sure his reasons for selling are genuine. I have no idea about the quality of these campers though.

We're not totally hung up on "new" but the pitfalls are many and we'd rather have a decent warranty should the unthinkable happen again. We'd rather not have a camper busily disintegrating in the middle of nowhere again. We were extraordinarily lucky in that our current camper collapsed as we were putting it up when we were very close to a competent boiler maker. None of the cracks that opened up were in the least apparent before we left.
By the time we find a good used camper and get it thoroughly inspected we'd probably be up for as much as a new one in our price range anyway.
But yes. If a good unit in our price range came along we'd consider it.
