Weigh bridge at Longwarry on the way home says towball is 188kg and the weight with a full water tank (120l), two gas bottles and all poles and canvas is as near to 1830 as it doesn't matter. Manufacturer quotes tare as 1470kg and towball 155kg. By the time we get the canvass and poles that we won't use out of it and put a couple of jerry's of fuel on it and put the fridge, crapper, food and other junk on it we'll still be well below 2 tonnes I reckon. We may have to stash some stuff on the car to keep the weight down - we'll see how we go I guess...:-)

Now all I've got to do is to learn to drive the car so as to not have another gearbox 5th gear poo itself...:-)

1500 kg is crazy for a camper , that's caravan type weight.
Sort of defeats the purpose of a camper trailer doesn't it ?

The star vision campers look to be well worth an up close and personal look - it'd be nice if there was a fridge slide though. Still we'll talk to ém. So far still leaning towards the Balance Trailers offerings. During the week we'll call a few makers and see what's what in the way of inclusions, deals, etc. While we were away we saw what looked to be the goods (around $8.6k on THAT auction site) and even to my unqualified eye the welding underneath looked to be rubbish - daggy, incomplete.
I have had a Star Vision for early 2 years and it's been great. Absolutely no probs at all. I've just ordered a new one from them as it has the fridge slide etc. talk to Ryan there, tell him you know Alan Ward and he'll do you a great deal.

BTW mine has been all across the Flinders and up to Birdsville plus plenty of high country and a couple of jaunts to Qld and back. No cracks and no problems.

Depends ... our KK compliance plate says a tare of 1000kg ... I'm sceptical .... the ATM says 1600kg .... they state the ball weight is manageable between 100-180kg .... packed and ready to leave on our last 3 week trip the ball weight was 199kg (and I packed as best as I could to reduce ball weight as much as possible) .... there's 190L of water + our gear, fridge, foods, batteries, etc .... I reckon we're towing around 1400-1500kg (haven't weighed it so I could be off) .... and that's a pretty heavy duty off-road kamper trailer that's gonna go wherever the D2 can go (and then some) .... 2 tons ATM off-road I think is starting to get a bit too much (at least with a D2) ... but if your towing it with say a 200 series v8 cruiser then not so bad.

A 1500kg caravan towed off-road probably would fall apart after not too long.

Just got back from our first trip longer than just overnight with our new camper. Moe to Nariel Creek, Bradleys Hut (near Cabramurra), Jingellic and back home. Would've loved to have a few more days but other pressures meant we had to cut it a bit short.
Camper is a delight to tow apart from being a bit heavy - 1700kg with all the impedimenta loaded. Only three really, really small problems. Slight water ingress at three places where some Velcro tabs are sewn into the seam. A few squirts with some seam sealant should fix that.

It's a fair bit heavier than our old camper though. In fact low third was needed in a couple of spots going up from Corryong to Bradleys Hut. On the hilly bits of the trip 3000rpm seemed to be the order of the day...:-) On the way down the car and camper brakes worked really well together although a bit smelly by the time we got down to Tumut 2 outlet. The good old D2 used no oil or coolant and made no funny noises. Was a bit hard to start at Bradleys at minus 5deg C according to the car thermometer.

It was a great, but short, trip but it was bloody cold at Bradleys - minus 8deg C which exposed the lack of insulating power of canvas. Next time we hit high country in May we WILL take a small heater.

All in all we are really happy with our camper.
