    Question on couplings & brakes

I've got an old trailer made from the back half of a LR series ute, including the axle housing & brake drums(not connected), etc. At the moment it has a standard ball hitch which I'm about to replace with something.

The trailer weighs about 420kgs empty. I can get it registered in WA for a max. accumulated mass of 999kgs without brakes, or aparently up to about 1900kgs if it's braked.

I want to use it as a basic off-road trailer (hopefully to go most places I take the rangie, as clearance & ramp-over allows) and probably wont load it more than 500-600kgs (plus 420kg tare weight), but of course my rangie is only supposed to tow 750kgs unbraked.

    My questions:
    - Can I use the standard drum brakes of the LR series axle to attach to a braked coupling and will they be effective enough to pass motor reg. inspection?

    - What sort of coupling would be best? - I like the look of the ORACs, or AT35 but haven't seen pics of them with braking cylinders. The whole trailer hasn;t cost me too much so far, so I don;t want to over do it with the coupling costs :-)

    - Where do I get the above couplings - I know a supplier of Trigg/Treggs, etc, here in WA, but not ORACs or AT35.

i can not answer your question on the brake drums as i have no expertise in that area, but the link to the manufacturers page on the at-35 is

    http://www.vehiclecomponents.com.au/conten...p?ContentID=455

there is heaps of info on the site re brakes etc as well, maybe it will help you

the orac is available thru camec

Your looking for override brake, like used on most car trailers,
it has a master cyl on the coupling which you plumb you brake line into.
only seen them for 50 mm ball, but I do think you can get them for off road coupling

this mite be a start for you

    Thanks guys,

    I called O'Brien's Trailers (03 97931380) for the ORAC - approx, $215 plain, $432 for overide) .

    Vechle Components (07 6324 3800) for the AT35 - $262+GST plain, $350+GST for mechanical overide (don't have hydraulic overide)

... ouch, it looks like the coupling is going to cost me more than the rest of the trailer has so far, unless I stay unbraked.

    Cheers,

Well you answered 2 questions for me, can you get a hydro orac? and how much? thanks. I am hooking up disco disk brakes on my camper trailer and I have no idea how well it will work and how it is seen by the relevant adr's. I cannot see any reason it will not be effective, It would be no different to a normal drum brake trailer setup.

Finally got around to ordering the ORAC with hydraulic override brakes today. Didn't end up as much as I'd thought - and it was time to stop stuffing around :-)
