    Lithium Regulations

We have ordered a new van and have opted for a lithium battery in it, we pick it up this saturday. The dealer has just rang and informed me that the battery that was to be located under the bed, now has to located out of the van due to regulations that will change after Easter in Victoria. I said that as it was to be delivered before that date it would not come under the new regulations, he said, and I can only take his word that it would be retrospective and if the van went into a service later on it would then have to be changed. If this is to be adopted over all vehicles, it would mean that anyone who had a lithium battery in the back of a wagon would be in breach of the law.
One would have thought that there might have been a bit more public announcements about the changes rather just informing caravan dealers.
It might be crap but they are having problems sourcing a large enough box that will hold a 200a/h battery.

Hmm.. I thought that only applied to batts for things like E bikes. It's a little concerning for me if it's for house batteries too, cos I don't really have anywhere else in the OKA other than inside.
I can't find any ref to the legislation.

I would have thought that LiFePO4 (LFP) would be just fine? The nasty other Li-ion (non LFP) batteries, found in e-scooters, etc, would be the dangerous ones?

As suggested, a link to the new regs would be helpful.

Me mate Google doesn't seem to know anything about that...

Have you asked him to provide the specific law/regulation reference for it?

    Lithium Regulations

Would relate to changes to the Australian Standard for battery installation in caravans that now requires all lithium-ion batteries to be located external to the habitable area.

After an admittedly brief glance it does not appear to agree with this:

    Lithium Regulations

oldyella 76 - I would just direct any questions to the relevant Caravan Industry association for how the changes will be applied in your case.

Normally Australian Standards which are enforced by regulations are not retrospective unless changes to the system are being made. And given they agreed to a delayed implementation of this standard to allow time for the Caravan Industry to adjust would tell you it is not being retrospectively applied in this case.

That is assuming of course you don’t want your new Caravan to comply with the latest standards.

The new law he's talking about is true but he can still fit them in your van but they have to be vented to outside of van.
Will it become retrospective I'm not sure but if it did there would be a revolt for sure and the insurance companies would have a field day canceling policies if not complied.

Just has to be external to the living area. Can be in its own space behind a wall or in its own compartment.

Would need to read the Australian Standard for the specific wording.
