    3-way expired

The van's 150L 3-way has expired, judging by the strong ammonia smell today. I always planned to replace it with a compressor fridge when it eventually got to the end of its life but I didn't expect it to last only 13 years. $2.5K for a replacement fridge is a lot of money to spend on a van that is rarely used and when the car has a fridge, but ducking out to the car's fridge isn't my idea of a permanent solution. Small 110L fridges can be bought quite cheaply but are hardley a suitable replacment for the large opening and don't have a decent temperature rating anyway. I might have to ponder this for a while.

Not a 150L replacement but the Bushman 130 is significantly under the $2K mark 130L Caravan Fridge & Freezer (12/24V) - Bushman DC85-X

The 130 would be quite adequate and it gets good reviews but it has disadvantages. Its freezer is only 6L which would be seen as a big step down from the previous 14L and would leave a 250mm gap at the bottom, although the bottom of the fridge being 250mm off the floor would be easier to access. If I'm going to spend $1,600 on a Bushman then easier to spend $2,500 on the almost-fits Dometic although the Dometic protrudes more so its door may foul the angled doorway opposite so not open fully. Fitting a $600 110L in the opening would devalue the van significantly and the T temperature rating of both the Bushman and the Dometic is a basic requirement for summer usage even if only a selling point, so it seems that the Dometic is only current option.
For the moment I think that I need to run the fridge until all the ammonia has evaporated so that the van can be used in the short term without a fridge.

After our original dumetic fridge door falling off I've never touched anything from them...
and if the van is rarely used the smaller Bushman freezer should work out ok...

have you checked to see if you can actually remove that dumetic from the van?
Ours had to be dismantled to get through the door....

And of course make sure the new one fits through the door before buying it. The battery ones are generally wider than the 3 way ones.

The old fridge might just fit out the door without removing the frame, although when the time comes it may be best to remove the frame anyway.

The Bushman 130's freezer capacity of 6L being less than half the size of the old fridge is pretty much a deal breaker, otherwise I would focus on this fridge. Unfortunately the 150L Dometic isn't exactly the same size as the old one so would still require fitting.

Bushman have advised that they don't have any plans to release a 150L this year. Their 190L has a proper size freezer so presumably so would a 150L.

I looked at a Kings 110L today. Whilst it has a 16L freezer, the fridge looks quite small compared with the 150L.

I'm just dipping my toe in these waters. Know nothing about van fridges, other than I want one. So, does something like this fit your bill? Any thoughts on the brand?

Thanks Tins. I had seen it but it's too tall by 300mm.

Oh. 300 is a bit much. Oh well. I may have a look for my OKA. Going to keep track of this thread.

Yes a real PITA when you can't get a like-for-like replacement. And regarding the door - we had a similar thing with our house fridge 2 years ago when our fridge died and the new models were all narrower and deeper and so wouldn't fit where it had to due to an external door.

    Happy hunting for the replacement.
