Waterpump - where is the power gone

    Initial setup:
A switch in the inside of my fathers LR which operates the waterpump.

    Change:
I added another switch to operate the waterpump from the outside as well. I run a new positive cable via a fuse to the switch and from there to the positive of the waterpump.

I turned the switch, the waterpump was working for about 10 seconds, then stopped. Tried the switch on the inside - the pump did not start again. Tried outside again - same result, pump did not start.

What did I do wrong? Any tips welcome.

    Cheers,
    Daniel

ummm water pump? as in from a tank?

blown the fuse, broken a connection, accidentally switched to earth and melted the switch, battery went flat..

A rough scematic of the electrics would help..

although if it was runnning off of a pressure switch and had one way valves it could just be that you have pressurised the pipes untill the pressure switch turned it off.

What is the rating of the pump (in watts or amps)

What is the rating of the switch

Was the original switch run through a fuse
Was the original switch run through a relay.

Things that could have gone wrong

The switch (2nd) one wasn't rated high enough to run the pump and if it failed it may have also blown the fuse for the original switch.

I'd disconnect your new wiring, see if there is a fuse and/or relay on the original wiring - check/repair/replace those if required

If there is a relay in the original circuit - you could just run the new live supply from the switch to the relay.

Let me know - I can sketch up a diagram for you - but let me know the rating of the pump and switch
