can my UK guests borrow my Defender?

Hi all - just a quickie - friends from UK arrive this month and want to rent a van to go behind my Def110 - they are both full UK license holders (in their late 50's) - do they need anything extra to tow a 24ft van - such as special tests etc - I think (hope) they are pretty competent as they have a Disco/van in UK?
    thanks

they will be allowed to drive anything that they are in the u.k.
i.e. what ever is on their british licence they will be allowed to drive over here for a full 1 year before they will need to get an aussie license

Check out where you stand with your insurance company with regards to the international licence/non listed driver in your contract.

Legally speaking if they have an international licence they can drive whatever is on that licence - but as said above, check with your insurance company! I seem to recall that only some UK licences allow towing anything except a light trailer, so this may be a problem, particularly as there is no towing licence in Australia for caravans etc.

one thing to watch out for...

budget insurance increase the excess if the drivers havent held a full AUSTRALIAN licence for 2 years or more. i know because they stung us for it after we first came out. I had been meticulous about the excess and checked with the insurer that we would be on the lower excess as we hadnt had our aussie licence 2 years, and was told 2 or 3 time, yes you have a full uk licence for 2+years your ok. documents came through stating excess was higher as we had not had aussie licence 2+years. needless to say we changed insurer as even though they admitted they were wrong they would not do anything about it.. GIO dont have a problem as im sure others dont...

just something to check for anyway... not that it makes the insurance invalid....

    Thanks

    Steve
