    Wild camper is born......

Well, after mutch sketching and talking the build has begun. The plan is to get the trailer built as a good platform for a heavy duty camper but stage 1 of the project is to get the trailer useable as a work trailer when necessary.

I ordered and received the following, 68 inch 45mm square axle, alco offroad electric brakes, alco offroad eye-eye springs with greasable shackles and high tensile u-bolts, 5/120 PCH drums to match the Disco (with M14 studs), a orac offroad coupling and handbrake + handbrake cable kit.

Day 1 involves ordering and collecting 2 lengths of 100 x 50 x 3mm duragal RHS and 2 lengths of 50 x 50 x 2.5mm duragal SHS. I manage to get most of the chassis cut and tacked together, excluding the base of what will become the front storage locker.

Day 2 has the chassis layout complete and i start to weld up the various joins, i also cut some 8mm plate to reinforce the spring hanger mounting points and tack in position the reinforceing plates and spring hangers. i had a rough idea where i wanted the axle to be positioned but i fine tuned the exact position by clamping the springs in position first and checking the weight by hand (very scientific) at the coupling. I moved the axle forward of where i wanted it by 100mm to give better balance.
I also assembled the hubs and positioned them on the axle to weld on the electric brake mounting plates.

Will be good to get the chassis rolling, its getting a bit heavy to keep moving by hand

Also went out and got some marine bearing grease and a heavy duty jockey wheel.

Thanks mate, no don't have a Mig but recently upgraded my old arc to a you beaut inverter welder. much nicer to weld with.

Today i installed the axle, then pulled the hubs apart and replaced the seals with marine seals, i had damaged one of them the night before and the marine seals look like they'll do a better job. Also made up a clamp-on bracket for the jockey wheel as i don't want it welded permanently to the drawbar, the clamp still needs grinding and refining but at least the chassis is now easily movable.

Yep, gonna have to watch the weight on the rest of the build, but it has to be a work trailer also, so needs to be strong.
