    Camper trailer wheel clearance

    G'day All

Could anyone let me know how much clearance they have on their offroad camper trailer wheels, between the inside sidewall and chassis (or trailer side). Mine has just the bare minimum of clearance (approx 1/2-3/4 of an inch), therefore looking into getting a longer axle. Current axle is 65 inches (tip to tip), thinking maybe a replacement around 70 inches which would give an extra 2.5 inches each side and still be within the guards. Or should I go up to the maximum size (about 73 inches) that I can fit between the guards.

    Thanks

Mine isn't much more than that, i lost alot of clearence when i fitted the Disco alloys with no offset from the 15in Ford sunnies that had a 25 to 35mm offset.

The best way to test if the clearence is OK, is to tow it to where there are articulation ruts, if they rub then get a bigger axle, if they don't, then leave it.

    Mine doesn't rub.

The bonus for me was that after fitting the Disco alloys, the trailer now has the same wheel track as my D2.

Do you know what rims you have? Toyota rims have greater offset than Nissan. This will set your tyres further out from the inner guards than Nissan.

Pajero have less offset again but same stud pattern

    Did you mean me?

If so I believe they are Nissan - if my memory from my Troopcarrier of 8 years ago is correct!

    They are ROH 8JJ X 16 (2 Trak) running BFG A/T 275/70x16

Sorry forgot to mention, camper had originally toyota split rims etc, just in the process of changing to the Disco rims, thus I don't want to change the offsets. At this stage I'll get a longer axle, probably around 70 inches giving an increase of 2 1/2 inches per side, but still well within the guards. (Anyone need a 65 inch (l) 45mm square axle?)

I just rebuilt mine with RRS wheels and ended up with 50mm and the same track as the RRS. A perfect match! I had to buy a new axle though.

My trailer guru told me that if you have much less than 30mm you can have trouble with thick mud building up. I don't know if this is true though but sounds reasonable.
