LED tail lights and Trailer ADRs

    Hi All

I want to modify the rear of my campertrailer and fit some bars to support my canoe. To do this, I need to weld some brackets to the rear of the trailer. Due to real estate shortages (lack of space) on the rear of the trailer my options are:

    * Use a smaller tail light (indicator/reverse/stop light) assembly, preferably LED to free up some space

    * Move the tail light assembly inboard, closer to the middle of the trailer

    This poses some questions:

    * Where can I find a copy of the relevant ADRs for trailer construction. I tried googleing for a while with no luck. I suspect there are limitations on the location and sizes of tail lights ?

    * Can anyone recommend a small as possible LED tail-light assembly that is still legal ?

Towing vehicle is a '95 Defender

    Thanks

The NSW RTA site has guidelines for trailer builders. I've downloaded it in the past.

That’s exactly what he wants. Remember that this is the national guidelines and the state is entitled to enforce tighter regulations. I have just recently gone through these with the QLD regs and fortunately this time QLD have pretty much gone along with nothing to add.

As for lights – most manufacturers will have their product labelled “ADR approved” or “ADR Pending” in their catalogues so if you stick to one of those you’ll be right – there are a lot of LED units that are not approved.

Guidelines are not enforcable by State's unless the state has legislatively implemented them.

Much like the EU regulations must be adopted by member countries before they are enforcable in that country.

I am sure you can use the strip LED lights that are a combination blinker brake light, they are very bright

If they can deliver trailers new with these lights

    Any LED should suffice

there is a minimum standard for the size of the lights.....

Im not sure if those long skinny ones will be suitable as primary lights but would be accepted as secondaries.

    LED's

LED is the way to go for your trailer. They are dearer than standard lights but well worth the money "no globes to replace and much tuffer". If you visit either the NARVA or HELLA Aust web sights they tell you if they are ADR approved and what for.
