    Cub camper

OK so we are getting very close to being able to get one second hand....

We like the spacematic so that was one of the requirements...and obviously would like the drover as that is the offroad model. But funds are probably not going to stretch that far...

Does anyone know if the Regal (which is the next model down from a drover) is any less capable off road.....its going to be more of a tourer but it will need to be able to be dragged through the rough stuff. Would we be ok with this model do you think.

I'm not talking massive rock climbing here but anywhere we would take the one 110 that wouldn't get panel damage if that gives you some idea.

oh and before I forget I have seen a few regals named with (XTD) is this a model of the regal or is it like an add on package?

i think i posted in your other thread

i towed my parents spacematic from brisbane to tassie and back over 30 odd days

my parents have just done the strzelecki and oodanatta tracks towing it with a falcon station wagon and are now in NT somewhere with no problems

they brought it new and had the trancontinental pack fitted, on there first trip to birsville the front spring hangers failed (have a close look at these before going on an extended dirt road trip) on the corrugated roads 70km out of birdsville, now that the springs and hangers have been upgraded they have had no problems

for hard floor campers they are pretty good value for money

the rear access panel gave me troubles if the ground was not flat and i did not check clearances.....it got bent up a few times, the canvas does get a bit of a sway up when its windy as there is 20' of canvas up there, sepup and pack up was pretty straight forward

hopefully it will be a hand me down in 18 months or so.........it has two single beds instead of the double

Yeah thanks weeds I know you posted in the other thread but I hadn't specified models....

I have no idea what the strzelecki track is like but the oodanatta track is a highway would be dragging it through tougher stuff than that......

for example If I was to go back to gove for a visit it has to handle 900k of what can be very punishing roads....

It has to be able to do places like the cape and the tanami for instance......

I have been looking at there web site and it looks like I should just be going for an off road model (didn't actually realise that a lot of there models can come off road) as if I'm correct the transcontinental pack doesn't come with the strong axel.

just had a look at there website and yes i didn't realise so many of there model are also offroad

there site indicates the trans pack has a heavy duty axle

i would no drag my parents supermatic with trans pack up say the old telegraph road at the cape, not enough clearance, it pretty long and the construction is a little light on, i don't think the back corner would like too many scrapes

thats the nice thing about the drover comes with 16" wheels thats got to be better for ground clearance I think it also has a wish bone set up....

Could you chequer plate up parts of the body though for protection against scrapes etc?

I just bought a spacematic with trans pack a few weeks ago. Parked it 10m behind the Disco and started taking it apart as the timber inside had mould. The wife reversed and hit the front corner of the Cub with the spare wheel of the Disco. Disco has a little scratch and cub $5500 damage ( it was insured). While I was taking the inside apart I thought its not very strong constructed. It's more like a caravan. It's very cheap plywood screwed to the steel frame.
It will be ok for us with the 2 kids and we don't go off road but just by looking at and under the thing I would not want to take it off road. I got the axel underslung but you want bigger tyres as well.

I should get it back in a week or two and can take some photos from the inside while I strip ot down if you want to.

I think the Campomatics as a whole arent up to the 110.

depends on what you mean aren't up to it.....like I said I dont want to be dragging it through somewhere like appin or anything that gets the car really really articulating...but at the same time it has to be able to put up with some abuse like heavily corrugated roads and if we decided to go to some where like the cape or the high country or the simpson etc. We have no plans for these places YET so all camping would be tame but I dont want to rule them out as we probably will in the future.

our budget about 15 but could push to 20 if we really saved hard and wanted what was on offer....

    Why do I like them?

    • I like the camper aspect I hate caravans...and I have seen off road caravans on dvd's in the cape (now I know they sit higher) but I can't understand that if a caravan can get through the cape why a cub couldn't
    • I like the hard floor, cleaning canvas before packing it away if it gets muddy is not my idea of fun. Also lost of space for the dogs and off of the floor so they wont get so cold
    • I like the fact you can have an indoor kitchen (this is the biggest thing I like about this) because if the whether is bad you only have to spend a very short time setting it up to get in the dry and you don't have to come out again to cook if you don't want to. This is also the reason I wanted an outdoor kitchen as well though so we do have the option to BBQ outside if we want.
    • You can carry a small boat on top if you like.
    • I'm guessing also a tad safer having a heater (if we camp when its really cold) having a hard bottom rather than a material one.

There was a couple of other reason I though of when I crawled over a drover at the camping show but can't think of them right now.

I have seen a couple of other trailer set ups and I'm not sure i like them, so far this is the only one I have come across so far that I do..If you have suggestions then please put them up...However didn't like any other ones at the show. I don't mind the T van but I think that would be cramped with 2 adults 3 large dogs

The biggest thing I don't like about the drovers in the years that we are looking to buy is they come with 15 wheels would be better if we could modifiy to take 16" wheels on a landy stud pattern so could get wheels to match but I don't know if that is possible.

The newest drovers come with 16" wheels and independent suspension

Pedro I like the second one of the links you have posted.....I have seen it before but forgot about it.
