I'm not sure, but I think the RTA allocate the VIN plates for trailers rather than you just pulling a VIN number out of the air.

If it has a VIN and a compliance plate I wouldn't have thought they'd be a problem. I remember when I took our Kamper and the Puma in to get registered when we got home last year there was two problems the inspector and I had.

1. Where is the engine number for the Puma? By rights he couldn't just accept the one on the sticker on the top of the engine. Luckily MLR had it provided with all the paper work and that was OK.

2. Where was the compliance plate on the trailer? This involved us both looking around underneath the trailer as he suspected it would be there. It was and all was happy.

This may not sound relevant but the NT uses the same underlying system as the RTA. Sounds to me like Ian got an inspector having a bad day.

Also you'll have to check but I suspect the trailer will need an annual roadworthy (as it has brakes) being NSW. Up here I will need one every 3 years until it is 9 years old and then it becomes annual.

I agree with all that except to explain the last sentence.

Our Dec 2002 build camper was inspected for the first time in the NT in July 2006, had its next inspection in July 2008 and is currently registered but will need its next inspection in July 2010.

Sooooo...

A camper trailer that has a 'ktichen' with attached gas bottle needs to have 4 inspections by its 10th anniversay and then annually after that.

When I built my trailer I had to apply for a vin number.
I had to fit a compliance plate(get them from a trailer shop and stamp or engrave the details) and yes it had to be inspected too.
When I got my renewal notice a couple of months ago,came up NEVER TO BE RE-LICENCED.They had issued 2 vin nos when I applied for 1,the guy who inspected it cancelled the vin allocated to the trailer.All sorted I HOPE!!!!

what in VIC?

do NSW have access to VIC database? or is it a national database as the Vin I'm assuming would have been issued down there if that is the case.

its a one owner trailer that came from VIC

I suspect that you will find each state has their own set of numbers, coordinated to the extent that they do not issue the same numbers (probably by a state identifying prefix) but that the various states computers do not talk to each other.

I remember how frustrating it was when I moved from Victoria to NSW - total of three vehicles and one trailer; in comparison, changing from RACV to NRMA took one phone call - their computers DO talk to each other!

Mine was checked against SA rego and the tralier and that one stayed as the VIN on my NT rego.

So its obviously easier here in the gool ol' NT!

Inspection

Step 2. Have an inspection
Most vehicles more than five years old must pass an annual safety inspection. If your vehicle needs an inspection, your Renewal Notice will say so. Trailers under 250kg do not need to be inspected.

Just about every camper trailer has to have a inspection certificate every year.
