Try this for size: What makes you think that the person at the RTA was telling the truth ? - the RTA ID check you are about to go thru is their way of being a PITA. In Victoria, certain trailers do not carry separate registration numbers, but the rego of the car that tows them.
Example of the RTA being a PITA: Acquire caravan that had been unreg for some years and passed through the hands of various people whilst unregistered. Get blue slip, go to RTA - refused on the grounds that the receipt of sale is not in the name as the last registered owner. After politely explaining that one can sell such things without having to tell the RTA, ( ie No, you are wrong) direct RTA officer to manager of office. RTA officer returns, says nothing and accepts registration.
Now you've been nominated for RTA ID check, there's not much you can do about it. Make sure everything is spot on as the ID inspectors are noted for being ...( you can insert whatever comment you desire)
Good luck.
I went to reg a nsw trailer in tassie that had run out of rego. I orignally tried to supply the nsw vin and the kindly lass behind the counter said no, that cant be right and I think if you went home and had another look you will find its a new trailer and there is no vin. Went home and sorted my problem, took the trailer to the inspection, passed, new tas vin fitted and then paid rego, oh so easy
cheers

I believe the cancelled /verboten VIN database is to protect against rebirthed cars so has a valid reason for existence. I guess it is just the application of the rules by an overzealous person that is the problem. If you have further problems ,zip off an email to the RTA ":contact us " address. They even completely changed an intersection that a council had stuffed up after I wrote to them!!!! LOL Regards Philip A
this is how our trailer is setup...it has a plate on the back same plate as the car with exempt trailer written on it there for was never registered seperatly.....by the owner..

You think you had trouble with the registration authorities? Try this on some time. A mate bought an unregistered trailer from the elderly next door neighbour. They bought the trailer new when he retired in Canberra and moved to Brisbane in 1986. The trailer did several trips back and forth moving their possessions and the ACT rego was never renewed. The trailer sat in their carport ever since until he died and she decided to sell and move to a retirement village. My mate went to register it at Qld. Transport using the makers name and number on a plate on the trailer. This is when the brown stuff got in the breeze. That number was already on register in Qld. on a well known make of camper trailer. QT did not recognise the original manufacturer either. Three weeks later after having to take the trailer to a QT office for inspection, QT declared it "home made" and issued a new number.
