Prodigy P3 Brake controller compatibility.

Someone commented that one of the most important things with the Prodigy P3 brake controller was to ensure it's compatibility with the van being towed. "Not compatible with some older brake systems" I think was the comment.
Now having committed to buying a 1995 Goldstream Storm Off Road camper & having actually bought, & in possession of, a nice new Prodigy P3 controller this was not music to my ears.
Can anyone tell me if these two items are compatible, or where I can find out from, before the scheduled fitting on Tuesday please?

That was probably me who posted that comment. When we bought our camper in 2008 we were told that the Tekonsha Prodigy, including the P3, were not always compatible with all brake controllers and were given a list of those that were compatible with the trailer we were buying. When we bought the trailer the newer controller unit was listed as compatible and we were told that this is not uncommon with the Prodigy units to be incompatible with different braking systems.

It all comes down to what brake system is fitted to the trailer and what the output signal it requires from the controller to activate it. I can't say the P3 will or won't work. All you can do is ask around or try it and see if it works.

I'd recommend posting up details of what the trailer system is as someone on here may already have the answer. Otherwise... good luck getting information out of Tekonsha or any of their distributors.

I bought a P3 and had a dreadful experience with an obviously faulty unit and found there to be no support. So I have no love of the units.

correct me if i'm wrong. I think you will find you have a Prodigy or a P3 - they are two different units. I have noticed some ebay sellers calling the new one (P3) the Prodigy P3.

Try and contact Goldstream, most manufacturers are happy to give info on past units. Find out what brakes were fitted (brand) and hope that they havn't been changed. The P3 does have a low initial kick in voltage compared to some...

Thanks Harlie, can't correct you as you are right. The unit was described as a Tekonsha P3 Prodigy???? I have been able, today, to contact both Goldstream main factory in Victoria & the nearest dealer to me here in northern NSW. Both don't see it as an issue.

Interesting comment.

As all brake controllers in question are for electric brakes on the trailer, I would be pleased if you could explain the different electric brake systems and why some controllers would be unsuitable.
