    Changing Hubs and Brakes

I have finally got around to fixing up my 86' Jayco finch camper. Currently it has HT hubs with a weird 9x 2 1/4" Hydraulic drum.

I wanted to get some Ford 9x 1 3/4 hub drums to fit the Freelander wheels I just got but I can't see them working.

Does anyone know if they will work, or do I need to get new backing plates and the works to go with it. If that is the case I am thinking that I might just ditch the brakes, after all, it only weighs about 600kg.

    Any suggestions?

Is that fully loaded for a trip? Water tanks full etc?
If not, then you'll easily exceed the 750kg cut-off

    Better to have brakes!

I wouldnt go without brakes on a trailer, regardless of weight. After my camping trip, and having to hit the anchors with an un-braked, I would not have a trailer without brakes!

If you were in NSW and close to Sydney I could give you the Ford mechanical drum hubs I have in the garage for you to try and see if they will fit, give a trailer place a call and ask them, you might only need to change from the pads to suit the new drum hubs, I'm fairly sure the backing plate will be the same.

Thanks for giving me a push on the brakes issue. I think I am better off spending the money to have them.

Thanks for the offer redback, the trailer places around here have proven pretty ****e so far, I hate sending business to those that don't deserve it.

The backing plates I have now do appear pretty much they same, I can get new backing plates with shoes etc for the same price as a new set of shoes so I might just get the whole kit and caboodle.

Another side thought, how about a rear axle out of a falcon wagon with disc brakes or maybe a beam axle from a magna wagon? Anyone gone down this path before?

I don't see a problem just getting new/secondhand hubs and narrower brake pads, it's only the width of the hubs and pads that is changing.

Although the width of the hubs maybe wider so the wheel cylinder on the backing plate doesn't rub on the inside of the hub, that could be why it is an unusual size, maybe the size of the hubs is normal for hydrulic brakes.
