Sounds interesting..Off topic here... Again. As interest is this one posted up on a forum?

Been thinking on the Sals today. I have a series 1 here with a 318 and Dana 60 CIGed. Runs 1100X16 tyres with 5/8 chains over them. Have never broken the diff or axles. It seems to tear the drive shaft off first.
The Dana 60 axles are bloody strong. Ive never had them out to count the splines.

Tony - for the tyre size you are running I don't think you could ever break MD or similar 24spl axles. Just buy the locker of your choice and if/when the stock axles break buy some upgrades.

For someone like Matt though who is running 35s though, I would at least fit 30Spl axles though.

Bear in mind - 24spl axles and locker are about the same price as 30spl. However there is a $1k jump to go to 35spl, as you need to change stub axles and bearings.

FYI, Here are some specs I posted ages ago on Pirate4x4
    DANA 60
    Ring gear - 9.75"
    Pinion Diameter - 1.626"
    Pinion Splines - 29
    Ring gear bolts - 12x0.5"
    Tooth width - 1.437"
    Ratios available - 3.54:1 - 7.17:1
    Axle splines available:
1.7" 40 spline (not stock - all others from factory)
    1.5" 35 spline
    1.31" 30spline
    1.31" 16 spline
NB - Sals is basically the same spec except for 1.24" 24spl axles.

    Diff specs - NISSAN H260
    Ring gear - 10.25"
    Pinion Diameter -
    Pinion Splines -
    Ring gear bolts -
    Tooth width -
    Ratios available - 3.5:1 - 4.88:1 ?
Axle splines available - see below

    Diff specs - NISSAN H230
    Ring gear - 9.2"
    Pinion Diameter -
    Pinion Splines -
    Ring gear bolts -
    Tooth width -
    Ratios available - 3.5:1 - 4.88:1 ?
Axle splines available - see below

ALL rear axles SEMI FLOATING ?
GQ Patrol 88-98 cab chassis rear 1.51" 37spline
    GQ Patrol 88-98 front 1.26" 31spline
    GQ Patrol 88-98 rear 1.31" 33spline
GU Patrol 98 on diesels rear 1.51" 37spline
    GU Patrol 98 on front 1.26" 31spline
    GU Patrol 98 on rear 1.31" 33spline
IMHO, a 35spl Sals would be preferable to an H260, as it is FF, and the overall package would be stronger.

Sorry for dropping in on the end of this thread.

If you go to 35sp Dana 60 are you not trading strength in the axle for weakness in the hub when you machine it out by 0.16"?

Or am I missing something here?

    Diana

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

NO, not at all (I assume you meant stub axle not hub?). You cannot machine the Sals stub axle out by that much, so you need to swap them for Jacmac billet (4340?) stub axles which run slimline bearings. IRC some slight hub machining is needed, but there is plenty of meat there - Series landies run MUCH larger inner bearings than coillers.

    Yes I meant stub axles.

When you say "Slimline bearings" are you talking about the bearings on Ford vehicles which are often used in making trailers? If the answer is yes, then they are only rated at 1450Kg per axle and that will reduce the loads that can be carried in your coiler won't it?

I am not sure which bearings you mean, but I am sure that ford trailer bearings could never fit over the monster 35-spline stub axles.

Jacmac could give you the PNs. I am sure the rating would be more than high enough. People have fitted them to 130s with no issues.

Ben, the H260 as used in the rear of GU leaf sprung Patrols is a full floater too.

Ah - OK. Cheers Rick. Is it also 37-spline?

Does anyone have any idea on current costs of 35spline axles and the jacmac stub axles? i have had a salisbury locker to go in my county for a while now just never got around to it, if i can afford to though i might sell it and get a dana 60 and go the 35 spline way.
