1993 Discovery V8i Air Con Problems

Hi there - first post...! Looking for a bit of help, we recently purchased a 1993 Discovery, only 110,000kms, love it but the only issue is the air con is no good. It just doesn't really get cold at all, from what i can see via some stickers etc under the hood it was re-gassed about a year ago so i don't think a re-gas will do it.

I was just wondering, before i have a mechanic charge me a fortune to try and diagnose the issue, if anyone knows of any common things it could be with these vehicles.

I'm very much into cars but when it comes to fixing or engine knowledge i'm not so great so dumb it down for me

    thank you

    Aircon is pretty simple .

You will probably find that it doesn't have enough gas. The car is old now and the hoses can spring leaks eg my 92 RRC . I just replaced a hose a coupe of weeks ago and yesterday no gas again

The best thing to do is get an aircon guy to look at it as you cannot regas it yourself anyway and they have the tools and diagnostic equipment to check it out.
This is the aggro of owning a very old car.

As Philip said or to clarify it you must be licensed to work on any refrigeration system (without confusing the issue by talking about natural refrigerants)

I am a fridgy and mine hasn't worked for about a year, I know where the fault is but can't work out how to fix it as I dont have the necessary specialised landrover equipment or knowledge. Most auto air places can do most of the work on them but if it is a pre update 94 then it will have the an Australian fitted A/C system not a factory fit. They have a unique fitting in them joining the outside hoses to the inside bit that gets cold so long as it isn't that then you should have no problems.

ring around and talk to them as many will have only worked on japanese cars and now that you own one - a landy can be a bit unique so make wure they know their way around one.

good luck with it, once I get all of my tools out of storage then I will get around to fixing it

Not sure where you are in Sydney but I took my 1992 Disco to the auto electrician in Randwick and the aircon was icy cold after a regas (I also noticed that one of the hoses under the dash hand come off - the one that leads to the RH drivers vent - maybe you should have a look at these too).

I upgraded to a 1997 Disco recently and took it to the same mob and now the new girl has icy aircon aswell!

Both of these just needed a regas and no leaks - no big ones anyway - so no actual servicing needed to be done. I think the place I go to give you the gas for free if it all goes in 3 months - you have to pay to get the leak fixed though!

Your 20 Year old disco hasn't done many km - my old one had about 333000 when I got rid of it!

Hi again - was hoping for some more advice! I've had it into a specialist air con / electrical place and have been told the compressor has a leak and needs to be replaced. They're saying around $1300. I've done some sourcing online and have indeed found the compressor new is about $900, however i've found brand new compressors in the states for about $250.

The problem is the guys in the states have never heard of the 3.5L 1993 model - they all say it started in 1994 with the 3.9L.

Would that compressor work for me? (that may be a really stupid question that shows how little mechanically minded i am!)

    Thanks again

I found what I think is the correct compressor for my 92RRC which should be the same.
New Sanden Style 709 V- Belt Double Groove - Compressors
Just check that your aircon has rubber hoses to the compressor as my RRC does as the outlets are different to the factory position but similar. Mine also has V belts so I am not sure you do or not.

Check the dimensions between the mounts which should be the same.

I was also told by my aircon guy only last week that the Sanden 508 can be used, but it clonks in a bit more and has slightly smaller capacity.
These are of course Chinese compressors.
