Some brand brake pads have a little metal tag that scraps on the disc when the brakes are getting down to indicate they need replacing soon. This gives a high pitch sound that goes away when brakes are touched.
Hi guys,
Just looking for a bit of direction on why I have a slight whistle which is noticeable at low speed with the window down. I don't think it is actually coming from the wheels though.
What I do notice is that if I only ever so slightly touch the brake pedal and not actual feel the brake apply it instantly goes away.
Background: Just had master brake cylinder replaced by a mechanic. He didn't seat a needle (my descripton) in the master cylinder on Wednesday properly just gone. On the Thursday whilst driving all the brakes came on and stayed on. I couldn't for love or money move the car even with the h/brake off and out of gear. Managed to get the owner of the mechanic shop to come and fix it and no more problem after that.
What I have been doing in the last 24 hours leading up to this whistle becoming evident. I went camping and drove over some fire trails that were very dusty. crossed two small creeks (depth no more than 30cm). Used the HDC down an incline and it appeared to work fine.
Brakes were tested for a road worthly only a week ago and passed.
Look forward to some comments and suggestions.
Regards
Tony

Thanks for the very quick reply.
When the mechanic did the brake test for the roadworthy he used a machine I noticed. I can be sure that he didn't remove the wheels to look at the pads visually.
Just bought the car about 3 weeks ago and don't have the history of when the brake pads were last done. Was planning on having them done as a precauction. That way I would know when they where done and how far I had travelled on them.
Will get online and order some replacement brake pads today.
Cheers
Tony
Could be the brake pads but if replacing them doesn't get rid of it you may have a broken manifold stud. This allows the manifold to warp and leak. It's a very common problem on Td5's, just do a search and you'll find plenty of info and fixes from other members.
Unfortunately if it has warped, it will need to be machined.
Many of the fixes have involved grinding out the webbing to allow the manifold to flex a little. From what I've seen, this is sometimes effective but not always.
My mechanic replaced all the studs with stainless steel ones and I have never had a recurrence of the problem since.

Thanks Wardy1 for the tip
Will investigate further.

You may have a small stone wedged in there somewhere?, jack up each wheel seperately, and give them a spin, (chock wheels and tut t/c in neutral), any noise in the wheels should be evident.
Exhaust manifold leak will be evident when on the thrilled under boost
Hi Guys,
Well I had the D2 in the garage to have the brake pads replaced. Having only bought the car back at the beginning of April and I didn't have any records of when they were last done. I bought the pads from the U.K (Mintex brand).
Picked her up this afternoon and there is no more noise. The wheels would have been off also that they might have moved a stone if there was one.
Thanks again for the input guys.
Regards
