    TD5 Spewing oil

    The good news; just home from work in the trusty?? disco 2 , the bad news; discovered that I have left a trail of oil on my way home and all over the driveway. Lucky only 5 km trip. The dip stick is just on the top up mark so could be worse.

    Tracked it to the centrifugal oil cleaner. The cover plate bolts have stripped themselves and the cover was rattling around spewing oil everywhere. It is about 7 000 km since last service so may have been done up too tight then and stripped or what?

    Looks like I can tap out the old 6 mm thread with 8 mm, obviously wondering if others have had the same thing happen and did you just put longer bolts with nuts on or did you use 8mm bolts and tap a new thread in the base? Would be pleased to hear from the collective wisdom.

    look into the 6mm helicoil kit and if your any good with how they work you will never have the problem again (providing you get it right the first time around)

    If you did want to re drill and tap it, you wouldnt necessarily have to go up to a Metric size, you could go to an imperial one inbetween m6 and m8 which would mean less metal removal. 9/32 maybe.

    Thumbs up Stripped 6mm Hole

    Hi All,
    mine stripped the sump bolts were the pipe bolts on the side. You can buy 7mm tap and studs. This taps out a stripped 6mm hole perfect.

    Happened to me 300km south of Katherine. Limped 15K into a roadhouse, searched through a massive box of old rusty bolts to put it back together, drove to Katherine slowly where a mechanic retapped it.

    This mechanic suggested that the problem was probably incorrect procedure for retightening bolts during previous service.

    4000kms later when MR Auto next serviced they informed me that the afore-mentioned mechanic had done it wrong as well and have fixed it properly now.

    Doesn't answer your question though.

    Will take a look at the 6 mm helicoil kit if not too expensive. Looks like there is an agent in Lismore otherwise will see if the 7 mm tap and studs or bolts will do. The worst part is wrath of the partner wondering when I am going to clean up the driveway!

    Job now done, $50 for a 6 mm Recoil kit from the tool shop. All seemed pretty easy with the tap, fitting tool and ten thread coils in the kit. Bit steep in the price dept but seems the way it goes in Australia. Top up with 2 litres oil and back to workhttp://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/smilies/sad.gif. Thanks for the pointers.
