Towing Big Boats

Hi All,
About six months ago I asked quite a few questions re towing large boats, nato hitches etc. I'd like to thank all those who gave input and share a photo of what I now tow behind by 96 130 Defender , no mods except for a free flowing exhaust. This is a 29 ft cat with 3 metre beam weighing in around 3.8 tons, standing about 3.7 metres high. This morning I towed it up a very steep boat ramp that was so slippery I almost fell walking down it. Low range diff lock on and a little accelerator .. no problems. On the 15 km drive home sat on about 60 km/h very nicely. Got up to 70 kmh in the 80 zone but not as comfortable , so dropped back to 60. Able to start on the flat with a bit of clutch ride in high range, no probs whatsoever in low range then shift on the fly.
So once again thanks very much to all for your valuable advice.

Something that big must scare off the fish .

Nice rig, when are you going to visit Moreton Bay? I will show you some great spots to frighten fish .

Are you legally allowed to tow a 3 mtre wide boat?
I was under the assumption that it would be exceeding the width regs ?

Had a look at Queensland Regs, http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/L...l_vehicles.pdf

Looks like 2.5m is the max up here.

2.5m is the limit without being oversize... you can goto 2.8m with out special exemption providing you comply with the regs regarding signage and overall dimensions... (mirrors are allowed out to 3.2m)

3m requires a permit.

edit ( the above link just loaded) the regs may have been changed since I last had to study them..

Yes it's not small. When I got my Defender I thought holy s... that's big, when I got the boat I thought what have I done. Even the wife says I need to buy a bigger car, alhtough only the F250 is larger and there are some things even I won't drive. However as mentioned it does tow quite well. Regarding tow widths, the trailer can be max 2.5 metres wide. The boat can be up to 3 metres with a police permit in QLD that basically states the restrictions, which are daylight travel only, oversize signs, flashing lights and "may not unduely obstruct traffic" so basically if you tow it in the main street at rush hour they could go you!
Best thing is the response I get from people when they realize the defender has only a 2.5 TD engine (300 TDI). "Jeez I could pull it with my hilux" tells me one bloke ...... No guesses that I had to hold my tongue replying to that one!
