This looks like a good AC system...

Chuck at Haultech put me onto the RedDot AC systems... They certainly look the goods.

I believe they are a completely self contained system, apart from the compressor. So it is simply a matter of curring a hole in the roof and attaching it, running a few hoses and cables, and gassing it up.

    What do people think???

For heavy-, medium- and light-duty trucks, construction and agricultural cabs

The R-6100 is the ultimate rooftop air conditioner design. Red Dot went the extra mile in designing a lightweight, high-capacity unit with a styled low profile that fits the aerodynamic truck designs of today. A sloping front rides comfortably over center marker lights. This is a must when roof space is minimal or air shields are used.

A low-profile plenum protrudes barely 1.5 inches into the cab and blends easily into the headliner, leaving ample headroom. Frigid, high-velocity air can be directed 360 degrees through the large diffusers located directly below the double blowers. Also featured is a cab air filter incorporated into the plenum.

The heavy-duty design contains tube and fin coil construction, high-capacity receiver drier and Red Dot Trinary System protection switch. The Trinary switch extends condenser motor life and guards against component failure. Should the R-6100 ever need service, only two outside bolts need be removed to access any component. The R-6100 is perfect for most truck applications, especially COE's where space in the cab is limited.

Looks the goods - would be perfect for my 120, as I won't have much room for an AC condenser up front.

33A draw might be an issue without an alternator upgrade, but that's easy to upgrade and not too exxy...

... speaking of costs, any idea what the unit costs?

    Cheers

Price - cheaper than any others I have seen. Don't know final price yet, but less than $2k.

And judging by their webpage, just about the right size that you could drop an old tyre over the top of it and it'd just look like you've got a spare on the roof.

Now you just need to work out a bonnet mount.

It does look good. Where is the compressor? Is the compressor run off the motor with gas tube running btw the unit and compressor?

That's what I have been told. Standard engine driven AC compressor. You just need to cut a hole in the roof, bolt the reddot unit on, connect power and the lines from the compressor.

I didn't realise you had a reddot system Gerry - I thought you had a different brand. Looks like you have the larger model???

Yeah, Ben, I can recommend RedDot, they are really robust, and give reliable service. Mine runs on the standard NipponDenso compressor. The only thing I have had to replace once, is the fan switch, which handles a bit of current. From memory mines a 27000btu unit. Great 'cause the County has plenty of compulsory external ventilation.........If I went for it again, I'd get the aircond/heater unit, would've been handy up the snowies last year.
