			aftermarket air conditioning

I was just after any info people may have about aftermarket air conditioning units in their defenders. I have a county and the a/c is woeful- the air coming out is nice and cold but the blower system is very ineffective and I have been told it is about as good as can be expected. I am thinking of a roof mounted unit such as a Red Dot headliner (see link below) but would like to know if anyone has any other options. Thanks for your help. Cheers,

I did a voltage check on the blower fan on mine and had around 10 volts to the fan at full speed. I fit a fused relay straight from the battery to the fan to operate on high speed only, made the world of difference. Still not perfect but drastically better. Try running a wire straight from the batt to the blower motor to see if it improves enough or not before installing a relay etc.....

G day mate, I have recintly had the same problem with my county. After playing around with the old system. They simply just dont work as it is too close to the motor and were an after thought when produced. The best thing to do is to fit the underdash unit out of an defender and use the existing compressor. I fit the dash unit (2 hours) and gave it to the air con man to fit the new hoses and dryer unit. It is easy to fit it screws up under the dash. I also replaced the condencer unit at the front to a bigger one. The condencer out of a falcon fits if you make new bracets. All up cost me Under dash unit 400 wire up 250 hoses and regas 350. Best thing I ever did, It is so cold and blows in your face. Any questions send me an email! Dont waste your time on the old system. Deano Geelong

					Deano,
Have just sent out a round of emails to Landy shops chasing a second hand underdash unit- only got 1 reply from British Off Road and that was $600 for a new unit. I have heaps of questions for you starting with:
 1. Where did you get your under dash unit from?
 2. How does it bolt up under the dash?
 3. What did you do with the passenger side stereo speaker that the ac unit will cover?
 4. It only has 2 vents on the drivers side- do you still get enough air from them or does it mostly go to the passenger?
 5. Does it allow some sort of set up to still give you the windscreen defogging option?
 6. Is the wiring super complicated or could I give it a go myself?

 Cheers

					Hiline,
The way I got onto the Red Dot a/c was from the OuterLimit forum for Rovers- a bloke in Cairns has just got a roof top unit installed like the AIr COmmand units. Here is the a copy of the dialogue:

I own a County diesel and live in Townsville and will be moving to Cairns next year.; The problem is my airconditioning is pretty poor and I have been told it is about as good as can be expected. I notice you have a red dot remote mounted ac unit. If you could please give me any info about this including a price and where you got it that would be great. Thanks,
 Pullsy

 Reply:
G'day, yeah, just got the Red Dot fitted about 1 month ago. The performance is really over the top, after fitting, the guys at FNQ Auto Air (0740517842) tested the unit, with three of them in the vehicle, in direct sunlight 95% humidity 30C, the in-car temp reached 13C, before they decided they needed jumpers to stay in any longer.
The unit on top has 2 fans, & plenty of ventilation. A dash controlled consol is in the cab, behind the cargo barrier. Uses your original compressor, just shows how inefficient the old system is!!, I'm finding my fuel consumption has dropped, because once the car is cool(2mins)- you only use the cooling setting on 1/4 & the fan on 2.
It is an expensive system,(about $4700- if your compressor is good) but I thought if I'm going to upgrade I may as well get something that does the job easily,(doesn't strain) and will last the distance as I won't ever sell the County. On top of that I picked up the County cheap (for what it is) so I don't mind spending a bit, especially on my comfort- important on long trips-could have bought a Cruiser for $60000!!!-and kept it for 5 years, then I'm up for it again-plus all the accessories.

SO Hiline as much as I like your idea, at the prices I would be looking at for the airconditioner and then the associated divorce and settlement cost it just make it a bit unfeasable for me. Plus I don't know how I would like going off road with a big box on my roof just waiting to get smashed by low hanging branches. Though if you would like to donate the air conditoner unit I will gladly trial the option for you!
 Cheers
 Pullsy

If it's a wagon this might be an idea

why not add a second system in the back out of a 60 series Sahara to increase cooling capacity ?

It plus the front one would more than adequately cool a vehicle for a lot less outlay. The cruiser evaporator box is only the size of two stacked four litre icecream containers so tucks into a corner. The boss has a sahara and with both coolers on max the cab gets very cold.

Probably get the rear evaporator + fan + air duct that goes up wall and over the roof fairly cheap. Install all that in yours, get it gassed up and  it's all good if you get over the having toyota parts in a landy.

If yours is a small cab like the two door/ four door might be stuck with improving by a roof mount system.

 Just a thought.
