It's good to know that the system will cool. I'm buying a County V8 next week and the A/C doesn't work.

I've seen the local LR workshop (KLR Automotive) do a few conversions to Defender systems but they take all the front left footroom.

					Ron,
At the risk of you snatching up any potential air con units I will tell you what I have found out so far.
British Off Road- SUnshine Coast, QLD- new $600
Discovery AUtomotive- Perth, WA- used $800
Truimph ROver Spares- SYdney?- used (but from TD5 so newer)- $450
Land VEhicle SPares- Sydney- used $350

So as you can see prices vary widely- these prices are only for the underdash part of the system which replace the bulky box located near the passenger firewall under the bonnet- you may need compressor, condensor work if you have a faulty a/c already. I am trying to chase up a private one and am waiting to see if it is available and a price so all the above are fair game. All suppliers listed are in the Recommended Suppliers area of this site. Hope you enjoy the COunty. Cheers,
 Pullsy

You'll be right, Pullsy. I'll check Land Vehicle Spares out - eventually (I'll have to wait for a while until Elisabeth gets over the purchase). LVS are only a short distance from where I live.

Hi pullsy, sorry i have not got back to you been very busy. I got my unit from toorak trackor factory in melbourne. It cost 400 dollars with wiring. Next I fitted it under the dash easy. I held it in place and measured where to cut the holes in the fire wall. I then drilled holes in a big circle and cut it out and left the pipes though the wall. I then gave it to auto electrition to wire up. This cost 280 dollars but he also ajusted the black box (termistat) lower than the factory setting so it is so cold. It is -8 at the condencer. I then replaced the codencer( In front of the radiator). I put a standard falcon condencer unit in 180 dollars. This was a **** of a job!. You have to pull the radiator out to do this but is ok and can be done. I then got new hoses fitted and plumbed into the old condencer/new air dryer and filled with gas. Make sure you get the gas with the trace die so you can find the leakes. The 4 vents are more than enough air and the two on the drivers side are fine. You do not touch the demister as it is still part of the old system and is fine. Mate my misses and kids love it. any more questions give me a yell Deano (Geelong)

Got the go ahead from my wife, so I am currently trying to get some more specific info from Land Vehicle Spares about their a/c units and also about the windscreen vent to try and put them back in once the defender ac unit is put in. I will leave my condenser etc as just before I brought the County the old owner had it thouroughly done over and all new hoses etc so will try it as is. I am thinking though after Hellspawns suggestion of a second a/c unit that if I am to remove the old box from under the bonnet it may leave me enough room to put in my starting battery under the bonnet and putting the ac box under the passenger seat and venting it towards the backseats. Anyway will let you know what happens- looking forward to driving in cool.
