    Defender airconditioner - sloshing!!

    Hey all

My A/C does work - I guess as well as expected anyway. Two problems I'm having with it though - and I wonder if anyone else's does the same.

    1) Unbelievable condensation, especially when it's ..uhmm... hot outside. The thing absolutely spews out water - through the vents at the top and down the face of the unit - all over the speaker that's mounted in it. I don't reckon that the speaker will last long being as wet as it is. It also soaks the footwell with quite a substantial amount of water.

    2) It makes a "sloshing" sound when you go around a tight corner - in either direction. If I'm turning into my driveway, for instance, it sounds as though I have an esky full of half-melted ice cubes sitting next to me. Is this normal?

I've done a brief investigation and found that the drain hose is actually connected where it presumably should be.

    Chars

    Chris,

I'm no expert... but it sounds to me that the drain could be blocked. On mine there is a rubber tube that pokes out just behind the frint passenger side wheel. You should be seeing lots of water comeing out of there. I'd be checking that first Should fix both problems

Welcome to the club of frustration :?
Mine does the same, it's a simple case of the drainpipes being blocked and the condensation spewing out all over the place, soaking the passenger footwell. Getting the thing clean is another matter alltogether I have tried hosing water in the one side and out the other, sticking flexible thin pipe up there to dislodge dust buildup and such, even had a guy take the whole unit out to clean etc, but still get the same result. Now i leave it and just turn the fan on highest every now and then to blow the water off the fan. It's a bugger here on the Gold Coast on a hot and humid day, which is about 90% of the time. If there are any easy solutions, i'm all ears

ps. having said that, it clogs on the inside, not the drainpipes as such. it's a bad design....

sounds like a drainage hole may be blocked. I know that discos suffer from a problem in that respect.

Thanks fellas. I guess that I'll just have to rip it apart to have a better look-see. I'm also thinking that it's blocked internally - before the outlet hose....

Hi Chris, as above mate, our Disco did the same and was leaking into the cab and dripping on my feet and pedals, i thought at first i had a leak from somewhere as it was raining when it was happening, but it was sorted by the 4WD Service centre at Taren Point.

The only good work they ever did

Did any of you ever try blasting some compressed air through the drain hose from the inside of the cabin??

Yes, tried that, no workee , too many "holes" in the thing. It's not an airtight unit as far as i know, the air blew everywhere except up the blocked pipes. I even tried it with water, took the unit out completely and rinsed it, worked for about 3 months, sloshing came back! It cools fairly well otherwise, but drips water everywhere while doing it.

If you don't keep the drain unblocked, the evaporator will (eventually) freeze up and that means no more cold air
Best try and unblock the drain and keep it unblocked. Somehow.
