    Airconditioning on 4bd1 Isuzu LR

To put air into my Isuzu LandRover I need a 'mainshft pulley on the engine for a belt to drive a compressor. The engine I have only has a single pulley.
Do I need to buy a double pulley or do you buy a pulley that bolts onto the main pulley so that I can run a second belt?
What are these pulleys called and are they readily available?
Hope the above makes sense but the best I can describe it. Thanks for help.
    David.

You can do either I have been told. A bolt on to the existing one would be easier. I asked a local isuzu wrecker who had them.

I found a suitable bolt on one at the local wrecker - can't remember what it came off, as it was about twelve years ago, but went to the wrecker armed with a tracing of the tapped holes in the pulley and had no trouble finding one.

My compressor is on a home made bracket to line up with this pulley above the alternator. When making a bracket for this engine it needs to be very strong and rigid to cope with the vibration.

naff that bolt on pully of and spent the time looking for a genuine double pully...

you dont want to know what happens when the shear loading of the compressor cutting in at full RPM loosens then shears said bolts....

I havent seen it happen on an aircon pully but I have seen it happen on a genset with a compressor bolted off the crank...

Luckily that was air cooled and the pully only fractured the fuel tank.

My 4BD1-T came from an Isuzu truck and was factory fitted with air. The drive pulley bolts to the front of the normal crankshaft pulley and the bracket for the compressor bolts to the lower left side of the engine block.

The compressor and bracket are not mounted at the moment, but if you like I can take some pics of the bracket and drive pulley.

    Air con

Yep the bolt on pulley from an Isuzu wrecker is fine as long as you use quality grade 8 bolts to secure it. You wont shear it off turning the compressor on & off.

I used a factory mounting kit from the wreckers and it fit snugly into a classic Range Rover engine bay. Just make sure you get rid of the plastic idler pulley with the non changeable bearing, and replace it with the steel unit with the changeable bearing. Repco sell them no worries.

Thanks for everyones input, will take myself to an Isuzu wreckers and look for the pulley and bracket for compressor.

What air compressor fits onto the bracket or can I use the Defender air compressor unit and feed it into an underdash unit from a defender wreck.
    Thanks again......David

    For wreckers, try http://www.nationaltruckspares.com.au/

Mine had a Sanden style compressor - probably a Nippondenso, but I would have to go and check.

Give Peter from Range Parts a call on 02 9896 2355, he had genuine Defender air con kits for sale for around the $600 mark from memory. I am sure it included all the in car bits you need????

Tell him Justin told about them.

After a few phone calls decided the best way to get parts from the wreckers was to turn up and ask.
From a 4bd1t I got a bracket and idler pulley with a compressor. From another yard I found a pulley to bolt to the harmonic balancer pulley.
On getting home it looks like I need to completely remove the alternator bracket and fix the alternator to the compressor body. If anyone has done this can they let me know that this is right?
The lead from Justin was very helpful and will get the dash unit from RangeParts. It is complete minus the brackets for an Isuzu and compressor.
On the compressor it is marked R12 which is the old gas, no longer used. What do I need to do to get the complete unit set up for the new gas.
Also the compressor clutch will be a 24v clutch, do I need to buy a new 12v compressor or can the clutch be changed (assuming it will run on ?134A gas).

Yep, heaps of questions...but slowly getting there.
    Thanks..........David
