Wheel bearings, swivel seals and hub seals.....Again.....

Hi guys! Sorry to bring the whole convert to oil hub issue again..... but it's time for new bearings to go into the D1........ And some seals and I need some ideas!

So what got me thinking I'd post up was the experience I had when I did the diff pinion seals. The old one that came out was a single lip seal and the new LR one was a dual lip seal. Bought genuine as it was the first time I'd been near these things and they weren't much anyway. So, thinking of this experience:

    * Hubs: I am ditching the grease method and going with oil filled hubs. Now I know the RTC3511 is the one to use, but has there been any upgrades to it from LR? So if you went in and ordered a hub seal for the old LR's that run these seals would they have a newer version? If so, what LR's used to run oil, or is it everything pre '93?

    * Swivel seal leaking, does anyone know what the part number is for this and if there's been any improvements to the original part number?

I have those damned rubber end caps on the front axles. But I'm a fine spline axle and can't use an earlier drive plate. I have a set of Longfield CV's and Mosler (think that's them) axles so I didn't get drive plates with them. What do you guys recommend doing to get rid of the rubber caps? Try cutting a thread and using a pipe cap? Just a thought..... Or buy MD ones?

And finally..... I have the wheel bearings listed as LM603011 for the race and LM603049 for the bearing. Is this correct? If anyone knows the Timken number, I'd love to know.

    Cheers!

Wheel bearings = Timken set 37

    Swivel seal = FTC3401 (Disco1)

    Oil hub seal = RTC3511

Don't know about updates to these but there might be.

I've converted mine to oil lubed and retained the front rubber end caps. They've never leaked for me.

Bewdy, thanks. Hey, just checking the FTC3401 is actually for oil filled and not the grease version. Or did they not change this?

I don't know if they changed it or not. They are however holding the oil in my oil filled swivels just fine.

Ah ha, I knew I'd seena reference to a newer seal! Thanks to Langy:

Hub bearings: Timkin set 37, FTC4785
Swivel bearings: Timkin cone 11590, cup 11520
Swivel seals: ( I get these mixed up,, but since the only place you are likly to find them is a LR outlet, they will know) FTC 3276,5268,3401
Hub seals: Single grease lip ?, double oil lip RTC 3511 and a new one, triple oil lip FRC8221.

The large swivel seal is about $30, the small ones $10, I don't know about the set 37, but the swivel bearings are expensive (at least from CBC - sold seperatly for $50 ea). The hub seals are only $10ea.

Now, does anyone have the correct part number for the swivel seals?

    Cheers

    According to Paddocks website
    FTC3276 stub axle oil seal
    FTC5268 stub axle oil seal
    FTC3401 swivel housing seal

I remember reading somewhere about the triple lip seal. Never seen one though.

I done my swivels last year and the bearings were $50 for a set,top and bottom. The chrome balls wear lines in them from the seals but mine haven't leaked with the one shot grease with double lipped seals.I set the preload on the swivels then again a fortnight later and my defender drives as good as new.I re-tightened all the bolts from front to back, the ''A'' frame bolts were quite loose and it all help.
