    How to check viscous fan function

    Hi with all debate on wether to fit electric or stick with the original viscous fan. Can someone tell me the simpleton way to check clutch function and can it be repaired.

    When the engine is cold the fan should 'free-wheel' - just get a drinking straw and/or a similar article - (cable tie) and with the engine running the straw should stop the fan when is cold

    Repeat the exercise with a hot engine - the straw will not stop the fan - and it may shread it

    MIND YOUR FINGERS

    Can they be repaired - I honestly don't think they can- but if I am wrong I am sure somebody will correct me

    had one repaired years ago on a near new xf falcon.i think the fluid leaked out

    they probably make them a throw away today like everything else

    If it is not possible to separate the centre and replace the fluid, I have heard of people drilling a small hole, filling it up then chucking a self tapper in. Not sure if it works but if you want to do it on the cheap might be worth a go.

    they are repairable but generally arent worth the effort these days...
