Firstly Bandiana is an Army History Unit Museum, not actually related to the Australian War Memorial other than being owned by the same Federal Government through different branches.
At our annual manditory training for the AAMME (SME Museum) we had a talk by the head of the Army History Unit. As usual funding was mentioned and due to the cost constrants and cuts, Defence only funds any of the AHU Museums's for building and grounds maintenance, staffing (both civilian and uniformed military) and a small sum in the thousands of dollars, not tens of thousands of dollars for the preservation of items in the collections. The reasons for this paltry funding is that Defence only considers the collections as secondary tools for the education of current soldier/students of the respective corps.
Most restoration is done from fundraising activities of the museums, individual donations, bequests and the time, effort, plus funds of the volunteers to the museums.
In regard to the Bandiana 101, it is likely the one under restoration is the one transferred from the AAMME several years ago, AAMME now has only one remaining 101 which is used as a service unit to the rest of the collection and for general transport around the base.
It seems that the only items on the list that AAMME is able to assist will be the indicator lenses and that information has been passed to the AAMME management. In fact only last year we had to repair the distributor and fuel tank sender of our museums 101 which was undertaken by donations and purchases from Anthony Johnson.
