    101 Radiator Cap

Branching out from Grey_Ghost's coolant loss issues with his 101

Using my IR thermometer, we found the engine never got past 94 but the temp gauge is out a fair bit, as is the fuel gauge, so thinking the 10 volt regulator may have seen better days.

Despite the dramas, thee vehicle drives VERY well, and is comfortable at 100KPH on the freeway, dropping down to around 80 on the steepest hills - a much better effort than mine can manage. All in all, a great vehicle.
Interestingly, the radiator cap was a genuine 101 radiator cap. It was about a millimeter short.
Of further interest, my registered 101 had the same problem. All my 101's have a radiator cap of that depth. I was told the RRC radiator cap would fit but it is also of that depth so it wouldn't seal. In the end, I used the radiator cap from a Mercedes W109 which was two millimeters deeper. That has appeared to have solved the problem.
I wonder how many 101's are out there with this problem and the owners don't notice? It is effectively like driving around with the radiator cap off and running an unpressurised cooling system.

Are these genuine parts - caps and radiators??

My 101 has genuine (new old stock) radiator and cap (they came in the big box of army parts and were installed a couple of years back) - they had both Land rover and Army Part numbers and stickers.

    I have no problems.

I suspect this is an issue of repro parts not a problem with genuine parts.

As far as I am aware, yes, genuine and aftermarket.
The cap on GG's 101 looks very genuine to me, however, I'm not saying yours aren't the correct ones. To confirm they would have to be measured.
Refer my previous post on the subject.

Well - no. The radiator and the cap are unique to the 101 (at least up to the late 70s) - to get the right one all you need is to get the one with the right 101 part number.

As you have genuine's, is the part number stamped on the cap?
Any chance of posting a photo so the markings can be seen?

Oh dear - as i said the radiator and the cap was in sealed Army/LR packaging and these are long gone - just as the steering column, the new 24v alternator, the new 24v shunt box, new steering wheel, new engine parts, wiper motors, left and right exhaust manifolds and about another 2000 individual parts all in Army/LR packaging. Much of the parts were in LRA packaging which is then packaged in army packaging or just with the army part numbers stickers or hand written . When 101s were sold at the auctions each vehicle normally came with a truckload parts as mine did.

Not sure about aftermarket caps but the genuine caps normally have a hole in them for the restraining chain that also comes with them.

I will have a look at things later tomorrow.

GG's has the holes. One of mine has the holes and the chain is still there. They are both short.

The rubber on my original cap went so I walked into the closest auto shop and picked up an equivalent that had a slightly higher pressure rating for $12. Works well in the driveway
