Thread: 9.00 16 Tyres

This it the option I am planning to use.. Here's a truck tyre fitted to a 19.5" steel rim, sat beside a 255/100R16.... I know which would cost less, and last longer.... Thoughts please!

Truck tyres are cheaper and last longer but if your going off the bitumen are not much good on 4x4's as the sidewalls are too stiff and you have to run too big a pressure, let them down to soften the ride and they overheat. rough as guts on corrugations.

I'd go for a flexible radial over truck tyre any day, specially in a vehicle as light as a 101 .

I might have a crack at these next time Tyres :: Interco Tyres :: TRXUS MT - OPW - Offroad Performance Warehouse - 1300 OPW 4X4 , plenty of big size choices and reportedly a great outback touring tyre, according to the seller popular with OKA customers.

Fair point.. I'm just not looking forward to replacing the XZL's at $700 a go! I'm also looking to get a larger rim so I can fit a large disk brake to the front axle, and prob the rear too.. I hadn't thought about how they'd handle in the dirt, and might just source two rims and get them modified to suit the 101 and see how they go.. They can always go on the planned trailer I want to build!!

Today I picked up 8 X 255/100 R16 Michelin XZL cases in very good condition. Four/five could have block separators cut to give 6-10 mm of useful tread or could be 'Bandaged' to whatever you like. Is there any interest for this type of tyre ?

What about MRF Tyres , those Sandgrip 9.00x16 Michelin lookalikes are 10 ply, like in the ebay ad mentioned earlier, about right for a 101

Beadell Tours in Adelaide seem to have a supply of MRF tyres there must be an existing importer. Pity they are not radials!

These tyres were run on OKA's originally before they went to 19.5's. I've 'rescued' some from the OKA community with a view to 're cycling' them into the 101 community. The first lot I had didn't last an hour , I now have a dozen more in various stages of wear. I know this should probably be posted in the markets area but wanted this info posted in the 101 area first as I know how difficult (and expensive) these tyres are to source, so my apologies mods. but my motives are pure . I won't post prices here as that's probably stretching my 'infraction' too far but suffice to say very cheap. Others can comment if they wish.

255/100's look like this when they wear down



The blue lines point to the tread separators, the green line shows the wear indicator. The tread separators should be cut out at this level of wear to restore traction and give 6-8mm of tread.

I have three remaining like this one above plus one or two more that can be grooved similarly. Note. The tread block separators are cut out and the case itself is not re grooved as these are non regroovable tyres. This is standard practice and part of the tyres design.

I also have another 4 cases that are good for re capping. These 255/100's recap heaps better than the old 900R16's as they have a flatter surface without the large side lugs of the old 900R16's. My old 900R16's could only support a 180mm wide Bandag retread whereas the 255/100's can take 219/220 mm wide tread for a much better result.
