County V8 hard to start after breaks.

The old girl does not like not being started after a weeks break. Once she starts, runs very well and starts with a single turn of the starter if driven each day.

I left it for two weeks and she will not start at all.

I have checked and cleaned the plugs and cleaned terminals on coil.

I have no idea why the time betweene starts makes a difference. Aerostart used to help but no more.

When it does start recently it has not liked too much throttle until warm and then when the cobwebs are blown out all is good again.

I am at a loss. Any help would be great because I am getting withdrawl symptoms not being able to drive and do not want to admit defeat in getting a mobile mechanic around.

    Thanks

Have you checked the points and the condensor?

Battery could be a little drained.

    Thanks,

Could be condenser but battery is newly charged and turns over very well.

Why would condenser be an issue if not started for a while though?

There is no manual for the ignition on the V8 County so I am a bit lost.

Check the fuel lines are in good condition and the fuel pump and filter is not clogged up.

Are you running twin carbs? If so check if the carbies are drawing equal amounts of air, I do this by ear.

Check that your distributor is secured in place and not loose. This may interfere with the ignition timing.

Remove the distributor cap, check the cap for cracks and rotor arm is not too worn.

Check f your contact breaker points are in good condition and no signs of burns and arcs.

If they are burnt and worn they need to be replaced, you can however file the points back slightly but be sure to reset the gap. If there are signs of arcing and wear then you should also change the condensor.

Check all the leads and spark plugs and the coil are in order and getting good spark.

I ended up going through all the other week, I finally came to my senses and installed an electronic ignition system.

Since then she starts every time!

    Money well spent.

I'd be inclined to say it was fuel, it is probably running back to tank and evaporating from the carby, so it is taking awhile to get back to the carby.

have you check the free flow from the fuel pump it may be low this wouldn't help and the fuel filter if blocked.

another vote for fuel.. disconnect the fuel line from the carbies and see if it squirts when you turn it over..

If wet weather has been happening in your area you might have rising damp. New leads should go a long way to cure it. Moisture gets under the loose boots.

If it won't start with aerostart, its sparkies

Chuck a plug in a lead, see how well its sparking when cranking, how long since new ignition stuff has been fitted?

Thanks I will start at the fuel pump and then work through the sparks. It is fuel injected whcih adds a little more complexity.

Will have a crack tongiht and get back on.

Thanks for the suggestions, as usual always a big help.

    Hi
I have another acr that I dont start often. The fuel leaks back to the tank so there is no fuel in the lines when you switch on. I have to wait a minute or so until pressure is back in the line and up to the SUs. Then it starts like a tractor....first one cylinder fires a couple of times, then two and finally I get 3 and more and we are away.

    Next day...starts first go.

    Good luck.

    Jim
