Master Cylinder

Hi all,
My master cylinder has given up the ghost (getting fluid on the floor!).

Pricing (Rover Parts Plus - Ballarat)

Master
Genuine $122
Aftermarket $66 (BritPart)

Master Repair Kit
Genuine $22
Aftermarket $6.80

Slave
Genuine $99
Aftermarket $44

Questions:
- Do the slave at the same time?
- Aftermarket or genuine?
- Rebuild master or replace unit?

(100,00kms on the TD5 now...)

I replaced mine with after market ones 20000km ago they were good brands. Ive just had them both replaced again as they were shot. Turns out you need to get the Master with a stainless steel insert so that it lasts ( I do not know where the repairer gets this done?) but i am told that the standard alloy masters get grooved and scratched very quickly and therefore fail. I dont know the genuine part but price wise its about the same as the moddified one.

do them both at the same time. take the old ones and have them sleeved then change them both again when one or the other leaks and never worry about it again.

Just to confuse things!!!
A 3/4" trailer brake master from your friendly trailer bloke will set you back $25 or so and will bolt straight in as a clutch master...

Its such a quick job I choose the cheap option!

Slave you are needing a LR part...

Repco in Warragul has them (the 3/4 trailer ones) on the shelf i noticed last week for about $35.00

So, are you saying remove them, get them sleeved, then fit them back on? Or resleeve them and keep them as spares?

Where would one get this done in Brisbane?

if you can afford to have the vehicle off of the road then just sleeve the existing ones and then re-install them. If not purchase some new ones (you can get them presleeved occasionally) install them and take the old ones to either a machine shop or a brake specialist have them sleeved then install the sleeved items when the ones on the vehicle leak again.

you might even get away with going to a wreckers buying some second hand ones, sleeving them and installing those first up.

heaps of options really it just comes down to how much time/money you have available.

I have purchased a LR Gen Repair Kit ($22) and a LR Gen Slave ($82).
They being installed Thursday.

Wanted the job right - then l don't have to worry about it again.

Mike,
Sounds like you are now getting the parts you need so this info is a bit late for you.
Fred Smith in Bayswater carries master cylinders that have been sleeved. He buys in a pattern slave cylinder and sends it out to get sleeved cost is about $130 from memory. You do have to reuse your old push-rod.
Re-sealing the master will get you out of trouble but isn't a long term solution.

If you're doing the job yourself the master cylinder can be removed without taking out the pedal box but it's a bit fiddly, you really need someone to help. I did it without help but had to cable tie a spanner in place to stop it falling off.

Ranga - Any good brake shop can get the re-sleeving done for about $80.
