What about the gas strut /prop idea in another recent post .
It assists with door opening and with holding door open

Has anyone converted their defender to the old style lift up/ drop down tailgate? I'm in and out of the rear of mine a dozen times a day and in most cases the slope on the road automatically closes the door. I have a (temporary) problem with both hands and wrists and the door is killing me. If this is possible, what model landrover would be best and easiest fit?

Haven't converted one, but there should be no problems. You can use a tailgate and hatch from any Landrover from Series 2 to current production. The better tailgates are the late Series 3 on with full galvanised steel liner. You will need the latches and top hinges as well as the full hatch and tailgate hardware. to fit on the body. Your chassis probably has the tailgate hinges, but if not they are easy to make and bolt on to the cross member.

Doing it in a week but not expecting any issues. Considering now the 110 dual is out here so should be able to buy them new from LRA again![]()

I know this is an old post, but how did you go with the conversion? I am looking to do the same on my '97 defer.
