    Bought My Next Defender!

    Hi All,
Having not had a Defender for the last 12 months (was made an offer l could not refuse so l sold it) l have finally bought a toy to play with for now, until we buy a new one.

    Vehicle:
    02 TD5 Extreme
    180,00kms

Bought from family friend - who has had Rovers since S1. This has been a 'work vehicle'. No towing. No off road.

    To Do:
    - ECU to TRS in SA.
    - Exhuast (Had straight through 3" on my last TD5 - loud) might go 2.75".

See what power l can get out of a TD5. We didn't touch our last one as we had it new - and LRA weren't happy for ECU mods for Wnty etc.

Cant wait to finlaise RWC etc and get it out there
    In good mechanical condition.

Anything l should know about early TD5s???

    Wiring looms...???

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike

Congrats on the purchase-they are a good model!

A bit of normal upkeep and she will go forever....

I have a 2002 TD5 Extreme currently. Have replaced fuel regulator-leaks from back of engine on drivers side. Just replaced MAF sensor which goes from air filter box to turbo.Have small oil leak to fix from turbo oil return to do...also invest in some Hi Tuff(Maxidrive) rear axles and flanges...LR axles will break...easily...
Just give yours a good service and she should be good in general... If anyone can help you out with doing a diagnostic with a Nanocom also....just look in the forums for nearest member...good luck!

    Hi there
Thanks for the reply. Funny thing - the fuel regulator was just replaced. If this is leaking does it cause the engine to run lower on power at all?

It had been driving a bit under-power l was told previously when l was looking at buying it. I thought it would be a finiky Rover electrical issue. Since it had been in for 180km service and to fix the fuel reg (at a Dealer) it has resumed to driving as per a normal TD5 power-wise. I drove it yesterday and it was fine. Pulled well up a reasonable hill in 5th.

It often has sat for months (4+) without being driven as the owners tour in another vehicle. It was only used a 'town car'. Perhaps a partially blocked fuel filter?

Yes indeed! I am hoping it also has a flashable ECU (I am fairly sure it does).

Check that it has the right OAT coolant in it (its usually red)
A 2002 Model will have plastic dowels locating the head these may have been replaced with steel ones at some point though.
You are likely to have a nnn500020 ecu which is writable
Also check your MAF if its down on power this can be done with a Nanocom or similar.
Make sure there is no oil in the red plug at the ECU if it is clean it up with contact cleaner and get yourself another injector loom
Good vehicle once you get it sorted

    Great thanks for that.
We are doing a pre-RWC on Monday in the workshop. I am going to go over things then. I have a spare harness from previous TD5 l had still.

Will check the service invoice - they did a 180kms service - would this have included a OAT change? I'm not sure.

Is it worth getting the platic dowels dealt with???

    Thanks, Mike

Depends who did the service with the coolant if it was a normal workshop in Adelaide they may not know what they were suppose to use.
Even if it was changed, historically it would be good to know that it had OAT in it though its life Oil coolers and things can suffer if it didn't.
Do a search on the plastic dowels if its not doing anything odd you can probably let it go but that said they really need a head job at about 160-180 Ks in my experience.
That said I have driven a 2001 with over 320 Ks on the clock and its on the original head gasket.
See how it goes does it use water etc.

    Hi Cheers,
The work was done at local LR Dealer - so l'd like to hope they would use OAT coolant! But l will check.

I'll do some searching re: Plastic dowels

    Thanks,
    Mike
