You just need 360 degree wrists and it comes off fine!
Cold engine to get it loosened.
It twists out from it's hiding spot ok.

						Ok today I dropped the oil in my 06 TD5 Defender. I'd also got my two oil filters from Triumph Rover Spares (I didn't even realise there were two!).
First off, I changed the funny smaller one (centrifugal?) easy enough, no dramas. Now when I went to go change the second oil filter (longer one, that you would see on a normal car) I realised it isn't going to come off easily, or at all due to a metal hose running from the turbo.
I realised pretty quick that my normal oil filter wrench won't work, couldn't get the chain wrench around so I will probably need to get some pliers for it.
I just want to check that before I unscrew it it will actually come off, or am I missing something.
Finally which is the one that is supposedly only meant to be changed every 60,000 km? I will probably always change both anyway but thought I would check.
Oh and the oil filter I'm having trouble getting off seems to have been a bit bared on the engine side - near the little depressions at the end. I couldn't see it but I could feel it. Seems like someone either had trouble getting it off, or put it on too tight!

Gday Xul. Get your hands on a metal strap type filter removal tool from any auto parts store. Undo screws to free strap and thread around filter. Then fit screw back and tighten. Then tighten the tool around the filter and turn clockwise. You will need to have a few bites at it to get it hand tight then you can unscrew it easily and remove it. I have to take off the oil return line from the turbo to change this (the full flow) filter. This is a pain but I CAN NOT get this filter off without it disconnected. This is the filter that lasts 60000Km. But I change mine every 15000Km. Rotor filter every 5000km. Hope this helps. Rgards Robbo.

						Is that correct about the filters? 60 thousand for the spin on and 5 thousand for the rotor filter? I serviced mine for the first time yesterday, did all the filters. I thought it was not too bad a job. You dont lose oil everywhere like u do on most jap cars with horizontal mounted filters. The hardest part was getting the stupid air filter cover to sit on properly!

The screw on filter will come out without removing any pipes. Its a bit of a giggle getting the new one in position and get the thread started but with a few choice expletives uttered at frequent intervals, it will go on. I do mine by hand.

						Cheers for that guys, didn't want to get it halfway off and realise I'd have to start taking of pipes! Have to try and pick up some pliers soon.
the cheapy cam action rubber belt ones from super cheap work fine. Access for them is from behind the turbo.

I thought the full flow filter was good for 20,000K's not sure of the other. but not 60,000k's.
