    Puma HELP!!!

    I have a 2009 Defender 110.
It is 14 months old and has done about 36000 kM.

I have had a lot of ongoing problems with it.
It seems to be in the dealers being repaired more often than not.

My main concern is that once the warranty has expired, I will be spending a fortune to keep it on the road.

    • Since new, there has always been a noise and shudder when doing speeds above 90 kM/hr and the motor is neither accelerating nor decelerating, but just coasting along. This is while it is in gear with the clutch released. I have been told that this is when the car is in float.
The noise is a hollow grinding noise. I have had the mechanic detect it whilst on a test run with me. After many repairs I have been told that this is normal...
I think they are saying this as they all know me on a first name basis from the number of times I have had the car in for repairs.

    The other major problem is that;
    • The gear box has become very rough. It cluncks and grinds when gears are changed. this happens at any speed, using any gear, gearing up and down.
The car never did this when I test drove it and for the first 8 months of my owning it. it seeems to have developed after the front diff failed and was replaced.
The service department of where I get my car repaired is now saying that this is normal and tha clunking and grinding is from the drive and running gear wind up. It seems strange!!!

    The third problem is;
    • The air conditioner. This worked perfectly for the first 8 months or so. It started playing up by freezing up. It worked normally for about 10 minuted and then it would become very cold then it would blow out a fog. When it did this, the air became warm and the volume of air that came out was dramatically reduced.
After bringing the car in for this problem 6 times without fixing it, they finally did something to it that has stopped this but now it does not blow cold air out. It only cools the air slightly.

As well as this, there has been leaks from 2 different seals that have leaked fluid onto the hand brake drum. I was told that these seals will always leak as there is a lot of travel in the parts that the seals are "sealing".

I have sent emails to LR Australia about these matters, but they are not answering my questions and are avoiding any commitments.

    So far there are numerous parts that have been repaired and replaced, including;
    • front diff
    • rear diff
    • drive shafts
    • uni or spider joints
    • clutch, twice
    • seals, several
    • turbo pipe
    • front lights wiring
    • air con bits?
After all of this whining, considering the age of my car. my questions to Puma owners and others are:
    1. Is clunking and grinding of gears normal?
    2. Is the float noise normal?
    3. Is the air conditioner not working, normal?
    4. Is it normal for the seals to leak and to have to replace them every year to prevent this?
I am frustrated and angry at the failures and breakdowns I have experienced so far.

I am considering going to the Office Of Fair Trading as I think that I have been sold a dud!!!

Any and all constructive comment are most welcomed.
I do love my Defender and have spent a fortune in putting on all the accessories that i could think of, but what should I do?

    Thank you for your comments!!!

    Alex.

    Hey Alex,

One thing you can do is get 3 more years of warranty. My advice is find a dealer, and it can be any dealer in Australia, who offers the allianz extended factory warranty and take it out - costs about $2400.00. You simply need to purchase this before your initial warranty runs out. You might consider buying it right now, as prices will go up over time. PM me and I can tell you where this is available.

As for your problems - the gearbox issue is the synchro - this is a warranty job so get it done. With mine, LR Australia couldn't get hold of special tool so after 4 weeks of keeping me waiting I demanded my vehicle be finished - so they replaced the entire gearbox. There have been 2 updated boxes since 2007 - so I now have a 2010 version and it's perfect now.

The AC issue is also a known fault and a warranty job - send Solmanic (on this forum) a PM and he can advise you.

As for the rest (and the above) - I advice you to take your vehicle to a Land Rover Specialist (MR Automotive, Redcliffe) for it's next service (or just take it there now) - when they do this service, ask them about all your concerns and get them to put a report in writing. Then you take that to the dealer to begin getting it sorted out. This is where I go for all my service work and they are brilliant. The dealers only seem to be able to fix stuff once MR give them a head up. The other good thing about the Allianz warranty is that MR are authorised to do all the work so you can bypass the dealers all together, if you choose, once your initial 3 years is done.

MR are really very good, and it is a widely held position here on this forum that they are the only people to take a LR to in Brisbane, along with Rick's on the GC. They won't bull**** you - they'll tell you exactly what is normal, what isn't, what is acceptable and what isn't.

Good luck, mate. I'm sure you'll get it all fixed up - it's a "over 3 or so year" thing getting these trucks fully up and running, at last in some cases.

    This saddens me to read

All those issues sound fixable - I can't explain why they haven't fixed them to date.

I agree with Scallops - that it might help to get MR to do a comprehensive check of the vehicle.

I didn't have a lot of luck with the dealers in Brisbane. They seemed to break as many things as they fixed, and usually I was the one that had to actually fix the thing afterwards. Oh well. I'm really not sure why... whether they are being pushed too hard by either LR or the management or both..

Anyway, ours is now 5 years old, and I'm about to go and pick it up from MR now after it's pre-trip service and check. They are certainly pretty good.

What you are suffering from are issues that were built into the car. You need to get the issues fixed by the dealer and once that is done you'll find they are quite reasonable to run on costs.

as for your aircon blowing cool air

what you described with the aircon is exactly what happened to ours..went in 3 times to be fixed they reckon its fine now but it doesn't work like it did when we first got it..the volume of air seems poor and your lucky if the air reaches you at the drivers seat.

sometimes I put my had up to the vent and I cant feel the air coming out as little as 10inches away and even when turning the fan up just seems to make more noise rather then push more air. I have learned to live with it as I was stick of being told it was normal.

I have 5 months left with my warranty and I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about this. Stick with it though get some extended warranty. I'm positive once all my issues are sorted my Puma will be an awesome vehicle. more so then it is now. Sometimes and very much in my case the issues wouldn't of seemed half as bad if I had competent people fixing it.

Your list is only half what has been done to mine so I guess I got the Monday morning hang over car and you got the Friday arvo I want to go to the pub car

Look at it this way someone's got to own them
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    Hi,

Thank you for replying. Your assurance and sugestions have helped me out.
I will pursue these issues with LR Australia.
I will also go to MR and get them to look at my car to see what they think.

It is good to have great support through AULRO.
I was about to give up on the whole idea of having my car fixed and running right.

It is also a comfort to see others have had the same issues but have managed to get them sorted.

I just want to enjoy my Machine and have it so that I can rely on its performance.

    Cheers, Machine...

Had this problem as well with D2's,so was a few years ago now,but is VERY frustrating.Sons Puma has not had many issues,so haven't been to the dealers very often lately.

What i can't work out is why i have never had this problem from other dealers of different manufacturers.I have run a fleet of Mitsy & tojo vans for 20yrs,& never, ever, had an issue with workmanship by the dealers mechanics.

As for warranty repairs,i found LR were excellent at trying to rectify any problems, even if they were let down by the mechanics in their workshop. They would also try to help if there was a problem & the vehicle was just out of warranty.
As for the jap manufacturers, they would try & get out of fixing anything & if there was a problem with a vehicle just out of warranty, they wouldn't have any interest at all of helping with the issue.Luckily,we have had very few issues.

    G'day Everyone,

Took a Puma for a test drive and was certainly impressed. It is really sad though that their have been quite a few issues on these. Yeah I know its part of living with a Defender in general but I think their comes a point as to what is acceptable problems and whats unacceptable. Obivoulsy their is a question on Quality Assurance. LR has been good with a lot of the warranty issues as members have stated. But looking at the list of things that have gone wrong is quite alarming.
As all the glossy brochure state this car is designed to go most anywhere and be reliable. Now for those who have had a list of major issues it would be quite stressful trying to plan a remote trip with the worry of all these problems or perveived problems occuring. Its great to hear the good posts on those that have had little problems but it seems those with major issues far out weigh the other.
As a person that is currently at the research stage to look at up grading it is certainly cause for concern.

    Jake
