    What component is leaking here ?

    Hi All,

    Can someone identify for me what this compnent is in the photo please? It is leaking with oil and therefore I assume neads replacement under warranty. Is it major can it sill be driven at least to the workshop. Car is 2008 SVX Puma

    That is the infamous Vacuum Pump. A search here will reveal some detail as there have been many instances of it failing (by that I mean leaking). It should be replaced under warranty by an improved version.

    Although mine hasn't failed yet I understand that it will be ok to drive providing you keep an eye on your Oil level. It spreads a little oil a long way.

    Ah that old chestnut, yes was wondering when the reaper would be calling on that component , too many here have written about it , so I was assuming mine was going to go at somes stage. What next ???? Rhetorical question , I dont really want to know.

    Usually the next component to leak will be the owners wallet, followed by their eyes and occasionally their nose. These will no doubt contaminate the showroom floor as your bodily fluids pool with the drool from the service managers mouth as he hands you the bill for the several other items that are not covered by the dealers warrantee.

    make sure the dealer fits version 3 of the pump with the double seals

    Yes it can be driven. If it gets worse though it will get messy as about 50mL of oil can leak out and apparently goes a long way in a hot engine bay.

    Mine was about the same state as yours and I drove from Oberon to Janolan Caves and back (down and up the switch back at night in a Defender is ), the next day went through Katoomba and down to Sydney towing the Kamper trailer. It didn't get any worse and Trivets replaced it a couple of days later.

    I have heard you can replace it for the Ford transit one as it apparently fits and doesn't suffer the failiure of the seals as the one fitted to the defenders.

    Subject/Concern: Brake Vacuum Pump Seal Oil Leak

    Summary: Oil leaking from the brake vacuum pump front oil seal.

    This version has been issued for a change in the Causal Part and End VIN.
    Cause: Dirt ingress into the pump pulley seal resulting in damage to the lip and subsequent oil leakage (the new brake vacuum pump has a secondary dirt lip seal). Suggested Customer Concern Code - R31.

    So although made by the same company these pumps are completly unique to the puma ?
    How infuriating anything proven to work they seemed to have binned in favour of new stuff that leaves new owners high and dry!!

    you can use the Ford one I guy I know had a failure just before Christmas no parts in the country and he wanted the car, off to Ford brought it and fitted it (cheaperalso) about 2 to 3 weeks later (in the new year) Lr rings come and we will fit the new one, he said no problem its fixed Oh you cannot use that!!!!
    why not its not Lr etc etc eventually I think they accepted and gave him thhe Lr part which is still on the shelf, so even the dealers did not know!!! not a suprise really!!
